NNPP Raises Alarm Over INEC’s Alleged Disregard for Court Ruling

A fresh dispute has emerged between the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with the party accusing the electoral body of ignoring a valid court directive concerning its leadership structure.

The controversy centers on the recognition of the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee, which the NNPP insists has already been affirmed by a court of competent jurisdiction. According to party officials, INEC was instructed to update its official records and formally acknowledge this leadership within a specified timeframe.

Delay Sparks Legal and Political Concerns

Speaking through its National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, the party expressed frustration that despite a 72-hour deadline issued by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, compliance has yet to occur weeks after the ruling. He noted that the commission has neither acted on the directive nor provided a convincing explanation for the delay.

Gossip News Now reports that the NNPP finds the situation particularly troubling given that INEC’s legal oversight is linked to Joash Amupitan, a respected legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The party questioned how such a development could unfold under leadership expected to uphold strict adherence to the law.

Olaposi further emphasized that official court procedures were duly followed, including proper service of the judgment, making the continued inaction difficult to justify.

Possible Impact on 2027 Elections

Beyond the immediate dispute, the NNPP warned that unresolved leadership recognition issues could disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections. The party argued that delays in complying with judicial rulings may force adjustments to the electoral timetable if not urgently addressed.

Reframing the party’s position, Olaposi suggested that fairness demands equal preparation time for all political parties, stressing that compliance with court decisions is essential to maintaining a level playing field.

Escalation: Threat of Legal Action

The NNPP signaled readiness to escalate the matter if the situation remains unresolved. It disclosed plans to initiate contempt proceedings against INEC should the commission fail to act within an additional timeframe.

In addition, the party called on key legal authorities—including Lateef Fagbemi and leadership within the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)—to investigate the situation and ensure that judicial authority is not undermined.

Democracy at Stake?

The party described INEC’s alleged actions as a potential risk to democratic stability, warning that disregard for court orders could erode public confidence in both electoral and judicial institutions.

It also pushed for internal reforms within the commission, particularly within its legal framework, as a way to restore credibility and reinforce institutional accountability.

Analysis: Institutional Tension or Systemic Issue?

The standoff between the NNPP and INEC reflects a broader challenge in Nigeria’s democratic process—balancing institutional independence with accountability to the rule of law. While electoral bodies must operate without undue interference, failure to comply with court judgments raises serious constitutional concerns.

If not resolved swiftly, the situation could set a precedent that complicates electoral preparations and deepens mistrust among political stakeholders. On the other hand, decisive action—either through compliance or judicial enforcement—could reaffirm the authority of the courts and stabilize the political environment ahead of 2027.
