Jos Court Sets Fresh Dates In Angwan Rukuba Terrorism Trial

Proceedings in the terrorism case connected to the deadly Angwan Rukuba killings have been moved forward after a High Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, fixed new dates for the continuation of hearing.

The case, which involves four individuals facing allegations bordering on terrorism and related offences, came before Justice Gidelia Fomyon at Court 9 during a case management session conducted under the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice laws.

Those standing trial in the matter are Isa Umar Ibrahim, Adamu Isa Alhassan, Auwalu Abubakar, and Musa Abubakar Ibrahim.

At the hearing, the Plateau State Attorney General, Philemon Daffi, appeared on behalf of the state government and led the prosecution team. Several defence lawyers were also present in court to represent the accused persons.

Legal representation for the first and second defendants was handled by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mustapha Shaba Ibrahim, alongside members of his legal team. Meanwhile, M.M. Salihu appeared for the third defendant, while M.B. Abdullahi represented the fourth accused person.

According to Gossip News Now, the prosecution informed the court that it was fully prepared for the case management process and formally adopted documents previously submitted before the court in May 2026.

The defence teams equally confirmed that their responses and filings had already been submitted within the timelines required by law.

During the proceedings, attention shifted to objections raised by some of the defendants regarding the authority of the court to preside over the matter. Defence counsel argued that those objections should be considered together with the main case after the trial had progressed substantially.

However, the prosecution strongly disagreed with that position, insisting that the issue of jurisdiction needed to be addressed immediately before the full trial proceeds any further.

The Attorney General maintained that allowing the matter to continue without first deciding the objections could ultimately waste judicial time if the court was later found to lack jurisdiction.

He also reminded the court that the case had generated widespread public attention, urging the judiciary to ensure speedy proceedings because of the seriousness of the allegations tied to the Angwan Rukuba killings.

After listening to both sides, Justice Fomyon ruled that the case management phase had been properly completed in line with existing criminal justice laws guiding such proceedings.

The judge further observed that while case management reports are generally expected within a specified period, the public importance and sensitive nature of the terrorism case made it necessary for all parties to agree on practical hearing dates.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to May 26, 2026, for the presentation of the official case management report.

In addition, July 1 and July 2, 2026, were fixed for the commencement of definite hearing sessions and witness appearances in the high-profile terrorism trial.

Public Attention Surrounding The Trial

The ongoing proceedings have continued to attract significant interest across Plateau State, especially because of the violent incidents linked to the Angwan Rukuba area.

Legal analysts believe the court’s decision to first address procedural and jurisdictional concerns could shape the pace and direction of the trial moving forward.

Observers also note that terrorism-related cases in Nigeria often come with heightened public scrutiny due to concerns about justice, accountability, and security within affected communities.
