Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up on how his opinion about controversial entertainer Charly Boy changed over the years, despite initially disapproving of the singer’s unusual appearance and lifestyle.
The former military ruler made the revelation during a recent appearance on the Before Tomorrow Comes Podcast, where he reflected on his long relationship with the family of late Supreme Court Justice, Chukwudifu Oputa.
According to Obasanjo, his admiration for the respected jurist made it difficult for him to understand how someone with Justice Oputa’s refined personality could have a son as unconventional as Charly Boy.
Gossip News Now recalls that the former president described the late justice as one of the very few Nigerians he genuinely respected and considered a close friend.
While speaking about his early encounters with the entertainer, Obasanjo admitted he was initially uncomfortable with the singer’s style of dressing and public behaviour, which sharply contrasted with the polished image of his father.
The former president explained that his first impression of Charly Boy was shaped largely by appearance, especially because he expected the son of a distinguished legal icon to reflect similar standards in conduct and presentation.
However, his perception reportedly changed after a visit to Justice Oputa, where he unexpectedly found the retired jurist staying comfortably in his son’s residence.
That encounter became a turning point for Obasanjo, who said he witnessed firsthand the level of care and dedication Charly Boy showed toward his father.
According to the former president, the entertainer’s devotion to his parents outweighed concerns about his eccentric public image. He noted that the affection and attention he saw inside the home revealed a completely different side of the entertainer that many people rarely noticed publicly.
Obasanjo further explained that he later understood that the entertainer’s dramatic fashion style, motorcycle lifestyle, and unconventional character were all part of his entertainment brand and public identity.
Over time, the former president said he developed a close relationship with Charly Boy, adding that he eventually stopped paying attention to the singer’s “jaga jaga” appearance because he recognized the humanity behind the public persona.
He also praised the entertainer’s relationship with his mother, describing her as a morally upright woman who received exceptional care from her son until her death.
The former Nigerian leader stated that the way Charly Boy honoured both parents taught him important lessons about family values, tolerance, and individuality.
Beyond the personal story, Obasanjo reflected on the parenting style of late Justice Oputa, noting that the retired judge allowed his son to pursue his preferred path in life despite expectations that he might follow a more traditional career route.
The former president pointed out that although Charly Boy did not become the type of professional many would have expected from the son of a Supreme Court justice, he remained committed to his chosen career and eventually earned acceptance from his father.
Lessons From The Story
Political and social observers believe the remarks from Obasanjo go beyond entertainment and family history. Many see the comments as a broader message about judging individuals solely by appearance or lifestyle choices.
Analysts also note that the story highlights the importance of parental understanding, especially when children choose career paths outside conventional expectations.
For many Nigerians, the relationship between Charly Boy and his late father reflects how family acceptance and support can still exist despite generational differences and contrasting lifestyles.
