Can Political Predictions Determine the 2027 Election?

As discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential election continue to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed suggestions that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is destined to lose the contest.

Instead of focusing on political forecasts, the party says its attention remains on building an organisation capable of winning the election through policy, strategy and grassroots mobilisation.

ADC Challenges Babachir Lawal’s Prediction

The Special Adviser on Research, Policy and Strategy to the ADC National Chairman, Chille Igbawua, criticised comments made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who predicted that Atiku would lose the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Igbawua argued that the prediction lacked factual evidence, describing it as a personal opinion rather than an assessment supported by political analysis or measurable data.

According to him, expressing a personal wish about an election outcome is different from presenting evidence capable of supporting such a conclusion.

Party Says Its Focus Is Winning, Not Political Rhetoric

Rather than engaging in speculative political debates, Igbawua said the ADC is concentrating on strengthening its internal structures ahead of the next general election.

He maintained that the party possesses one of Nigeria’s most comprehensive policy documents and intends to campaign on programmes designed to address governance challenges.

According to the party official, confidence within the ADC is driven by organisational planning, electoral research and continuous political analysis rather than public declarations or campaign rhetoric.

ADC Responds to Claims About Peter Obi and the Opposition Coalition

Addressing questions about Peter Obi’s involvement in the opposition movement, Igbawua stated that the former Anambra State governor was not among those who initiated the coalition that eventually adopted the ADC as its political platform.

He explained that the coalition had already completed its consultations and selected the party before Obi became involved, adding that his entry came after the major groundwork had been concluded.

Party Defends Its Presidential Primary

Igbawua also rejected allegations that the ADC failed to follow due process during its presidential primary.

According to him, every stage of the exercise complied with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Although he acknowledged that no political primary is entirely flawless, he argued that the ADC subjected itself to a more open and competitive internal process than many other political parties.

He maintained that the exercise reflected a stronger commitment to internal democracy.

ADC Disagrees With Obi-Kwankwaso Electoral Calculations

The ADC official also questioned projections suggesting that a possible Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket would automatically outperform other combinations simply by combining votes recorded during the 2023 general election.

According to Igbawua, electoral contests cannot be accurately assessed by adding together previous voting figures without considering changing political realities, alliances, voter behaviour and campaign dynamics.

He further argued that comparing individual politicians without considering their running mates presents an incomplete picture of any presidential contest.

Amaechi’s Influence Should Not Be Ignored

As part of that argument, Igbawua pointed to former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, describing him as a significant political figure whose influence should also be considered in any assessment of future presidential tickets.

He noted that Amaechi’s previous performance during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary demonstrated that he remained an important political actor rather than someone who could easily be discounted.

From the ADC’s perspective, he argued, comparisons between prospective presidential tickets should evaluate the strength of both candidates on each ticket rather than focusing on one individual.

Party Wants Policies to Define Governance

Beyond personalities and electoral arithmetic, Igbawua said the ADC intends to shift political attention toward governance driven by party programmes instead of individual politicians.

He explained that the party’s manifesto focuses on repairing institutions, strengthening security, improving governance and delivering measurable outcomes for Nigerians.

On the issue of fuel subsidy removal, he clarified that the ADC was not opposed to the policy itself but questioned how the Federal Government had managed the resources generated after its removal.

According to him, greater transparency regarding the use of those funds would help address public concerns over the hardship experienced by many Nigerians.

Youth and Women Remain Part of ADC’s Strategy

Igbawua also highlighted the party’s efforts to expand opportunities for younger Nigerians and women within its leadership structure.

He said the ADC has deliberately appointed young professionals and women into strategic national positions, arguing that broader participation strengthens internal democracy and improves governance.

He added that Atiku has consistently worked with younger politicians and professionals throughout his political career, saying the party intends to continue promoting inclusive leadership as preparations for the 2027 elections progress.
