Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has addressed circulating claims suggesting he publicly attacked the current national team coach following Nigeria’s failure to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The confusion began after Nigeria’s elimination from the qualification race, which ended in heartbreak for fans. The Super Eagles were knocked out after losing a penalty shootout against DR Congo national football team, following a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
In the aftermath of that result, some online reports suggested Oliseh had harshly criticised Eric Chelle for the team’s failure. However, the former midfielder has now responded to those claims directly.
According to Gossip News Now reports that Oliseh took to the social platform 𝕏 to correct what he described as a misunderstanding surrounding his earlier remarks.
The football legend explained that he never questioned Chelle’s technical competence. Instead, he clarified that his concern had originally centred on the process used to appoint the coach rather than the coach’s performance since taking charge.
Oliseh stressed that his comments were taken out of context and that viewers should revisit the full clip of his interview to understand what he actually meant.
In his clarification, he noted that although he initially disagreed with the decision to appoint a foreign coach instead of a qualified Nigerian candidate, he believes Chelle has made commendable efforts with the team so far.
He essentially argued that the situation had been misrepresented online and that his statements were never intended as a personal attack on the coach.
Focus Shifts to AFCON Preparations
With the World Cup qualification campaign now concluded, attention within Nigerian football circles has turned toward the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco.
The Super Eagles have been drawn into a competitive group where they will face:
- Uganda national football team
- Tunisia national football team
- Tanzania national football team
As preparations begin, the coaching crew led by Chelle is expected to release a provisional squad list soon as part of the team’s build-up to the tournament.
Commentary and Analysis
The situation surrounding Oliseh’s comments highlights a recurring issue in modern sports reporting: statements shared on social media can quickly be interpreted differently once removed from their full context.
In Nigerian football especially, discussions about whether the national team should be managed by a local or foreign coach remain a frequent topic of debate among analysts and supporters.
While disappointment over missing out on the 2026 World Cup remains fresh, the Super Eagles now face a new opportunity to restore confidence through a strong performance at the upcoming AFCON tournament.
If managed well, the competition in Morocco could become a crucial moment for rebuilding momentum and unity around the national team.
