Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed optimism that the party’s ongoing internal crisis can be swiftly resolved if its leaders choose dialogue over courtroom battles.
Olawepo-Hashim said the PDP’s challenges would not threaten the party’s survival if stakeholders embrace political engagement as the primary tool for conflict resolution. According to him, adopting political solutions could bring the crisis to an end within just one week.
He made this known on Tuesday during a consultative meeting with the PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), held as part of efforts to reach an amicable, out-of-court settlement of the party’s dispute.
The former presidential hopeful stressed that resolving the matter internally would not only strengthen the PDP but also reinforce Nigeria’s multiparty democratic system.
Olawepo-Hashim noted that the party has sufficient legitimate members within the National Executive Committee (NEC) to convene an emergency meeting capable of decisively addressing the crisis.
He referenced Sections 3(1) and 3(4) of the PDP Constitution, which empower two-thirds of NEC members to call a meeting, explaining that most NEC members were elected before the controversial Ibadan convention and therefore maintain unquestionable legitimacy.
He further explained that although the tenure of some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) expired on December 8, the NEC members elected prior to the Ibadan convention still possess the constitutional authority to step in and take corrective measures in the overall interest of the party.
