A senior aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarenwaju, has praised Peter Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s evolving opposition politics.

Obi formally announced his defection to the ADC on Tuesday during a political gathering in Enugu State, drawing reactions from key political figures across the country.

Reacting via his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, Olarenwaju called on supporters of both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to set aside political differences and work toward a united opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He argued that Nigeria’s future remains uncertain under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, stressing the need for collaboration among opposition forces.

In his remarks, Olarenwaju suggested that Obi’s move had long been anticipated by political observers who understood the direction of opposition realignment. He urged loyalists of both political camps—popularly known as Atikulates and Obidients—to drop rivalries and embrace cooperation in the interest of national stability and progress.

According to him, the push for unity is not merely political but necessary to secure the country’s future, which he believes is currently at risk.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has reiterated his concerns over what he described as the growing public glorification of electoral malpractice in Nigeria.

Speaking on Wednesday in Enugu State during his formal declaration for the ADC coalition, the former Anambra State governor warned that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 elections would be firmly challenged through lawful and democratic means.

Obi criticized the trend of political actors who, after benefiting from democracy, now undermine it through intimidation, coercion, and political thuggery targeted at opposition groups.

He also called for early and transparent verification of candidates’ academic credentials to prevent avoidable legal battles before elections.

According to Obi, the open celebration of electoral fraud poses a grave threat to democracy, adding that those planning to rig future elections should be prepared for lawful resistance.
