Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has opened up on the football figures who inspired his career, naming former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel and legendary Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos as his biggest role models ahead of Nigeria’s Round of 16 showdown with Mozambique at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Awaziem, who has featured twice for Nigeria at AFCON 2025, explained that Mikel’s journey from modest beginnings to global recognition left a deep impression on him from an early age.
“John Obi Mikel has always been my idol,” Awaziem said while speaking ahead of the knockout encounter. “Even though I’m not a midfielder, I’ve known him since I was young.”
The FC Nantes centre-back revealed a personal connection with the former Super Eagles captain, noting that they grew up in the same neighbourhood in Jos, Plateau State.
“We lived in the same old area in Jos, so I’ve known Mikel for a long time. He also came from my academy, which made him someone I really looked up to,” he added.
When discussing defensive inspiration, Awaziem pointed to one name he believes sets the standard at the highest level.
“For my position, Sergio Ramos is my idol,” he said. “He represents everything a top defender should be.”
Beyond personal admiration, Awaziem stressed that the team’s focus is firmly fixed on continental success, insisting that the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup has been put behind them.
“Our focus now is the AFCON,” he said. “The World Cup is in the past, and we’re no longer thinking about it. We want to give everything and fight for this trophy.”
According to the defender, the Super Eagles camp is fully united and mentally prepared as the competition enters its decisive phase in Morocco.
“Everyone is locked in,” he explained. “The players are focused, ready, and committed to giving their best to make Nigeria proud.”
While confidence is high, Awaziem was careful not to make bold promises, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football.
“I can’t promise anything,” he said. “In football, you don’t make promises. You work hard, and the team that performs better on the day wins.”
Looking ahead to the clash with Mozambique, Awaziem outlined Nigeria’s simple objective.
“We want to be the better team, create more chances, take those chances, and win the game,” he concluded.
