Former media aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has urged opposition leaders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to embrace unity as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

Onochie emphasized that the strength of the ADC lies in collective action, stressing that the party can only succeed if all members work together, regardless of their political origins.

She made specific reference to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his supporters, popularly known as the Obidient Movement, noting that cooperation within the party is essential.

According to Onochie, just as no other political bloc that merged into the ADC operates independently, the Obidient Movement should also not function as a separate entity within the party.

She stated that the ADC represents a single political family and that anyone who joins the party must do so fully, without setting conditions or operating parallel structures.

“My understanding is that we are all now members of the ADC, irrespective of our different political backgrounds — APC, PDP, APGA, SDP, Obidient, Labour Party, Buhari Support Organisations, and others,” she wrote.

“I strongly believe that Mr. Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement understand that we are stronger together. No group can exist in isolation within a union and still succeed — none.”

She added that just as Buhari Support Organisations are not operating separately within the ADC, the same standard applies to the Obidient Movement.

“We are not standing as separate entities inside the ADC. We are one family. We have one house, and that house is the ADC. Anyone who joins must live fully in that house,” she said.

Onochie concluded her message with a rallying call for unity and national progress.

“No conditions. No exceptions. ADC, arise. Arise and shine, Nigeria,” she wrote on her official Facebook page on Sunday.

Her comments come in the wake of a recent declaration by the Obidient Movement, which stated that it would only support Peter Obi as a presidential candidate on the ADC platform and would not back him for a vice-presidential role under any arrangement.

The movement issued the clarification after reports attributed to its National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, suggested it might remain in the ADC even if Obi failed to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
