Cameroon head coach David Pagou has highlighted a crucial moment in the second half as the decisive factor behind their quarter-final loss to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Indomitable Lions were eliminated on Friday night after Morocco delivered a dominant performance, securing a 2-0 win to progress to the semi-finals.

Morocco controlled the match from the opening stages, with Brahim Diaz finding the back of the net in the first half. After the interval, Ismael Saibari doubled the lead, effectively sealing the result and leaving Cameroon with little room to recover.

Following the defeat, Pagou spoke highly of his squad’s determination and fighting spirit despite falling short.

“I’m proud of my players. We competed well against Morocco, and we leave this AFCON with our heads up,” Pagou said.

He explained that although Cameroon rallied in the second half, conceding the second goal ultimately shaped the outcome.

“We faced some difficulties but responded strongly after the break. However, the second goal changed everything. Overall, I am pleased with the performance.”

On the opposite end, Morocco manager Walid Regragui praised Brahim Diaz, emphasizing the winger’s importance as the tournament approaches its decisive phase.

Regragui also reminded his team to remain disciplined and respectful amid rising expectations from fans.

“Diaz is an exceptional player. I congratulate him on his performances,” the coach stated.

“We must stay humble because every team wants to defeat us in this AFCON, and we need to respect all our opponents.”

With their victory, the Atlas Lions advance to the semi-finals, where they will meet the winner of the clash between Nigeria and Algeria.

Friday’s fixtures also confirmed Mali’s exit after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Senegal.

More high-stakes quarter-final action continues on Saturday as Nigeria battles Algeria, while Egypt faces defending champions Ivory Coast in the last of the round’s matchups.
