Factions loyal to Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde are reportedly weighing options outside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in anticipation of the 2027 elections. Political insiders say the divisions within the PDP have prompted talks with other platforms, notably the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as possible fallback strategies.
Sources indicate that unresolved leadership conflicts in the PDP, coupled with ongoing court battles and a ruling by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejecting the party’s governorship candidate in Ekiti, have amplified fears that the party may be unable to field credible candidates next year.
A member of the Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) explained that the party’s internal disputes could jeopardize its 2027 participation. He revealed that discussions with the ADC were already in motion to ensure aspirants from both factions have alternative platforms. “With what INEC has done to our candidate in Ekiti, we should stop deceiving ourselves; the possibility of having candidates for the 2027 elections is very low,” he said, adding that a “clear framework” for collaboration with the ADC is being explored.
Divergent Views Within the PDP
The Wike-aligned faction, represented by Timothy Osadolor, expressed skepticism about the PDP’s capacity to remain competitive. He criticized the governors’ “arrogance” and rushed convention in Ibadan, arguing that the damage to the party’s cohesion is extensive. Osadolor stated, “For me, 2027 is already lost for the PDP. Contesting the election alone would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.”
Despite dismissing the APC as a viable alternative, citing it as a platform associated with “hunger, hopelessness and frustration,” Osadolor highlighted the ADC as a promising option. He believes that with proper coordination, the ADC could consolidate opposition forces to mount a credible challenge against President Bola Tinubu.
Preliminary Talks and Strategic Planning
An ADC official confirmed early-stage discussions with PDP representatives from the Turaki faction but emphasized that no formal agreement has been reached. ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi noted: “We welcome every Nigerian who wants to be part of the rescue mission.” These preliminary negotiations indicate that both sides are exploring options for a united opposition front without making premature commitments.
Political analysts suggest that the PDP’s ongoing leadership crisis and the inability to field candidates could fundamentally reshape the opposition landscape ahead of 2027. Both factions’ openness to alternative platforms underscores the urgency for strategic alliances and indicates that party loyalty may yield to pragmatic considerations in pursuit of electoral success.
If properly coordinated, the ADC could emerge as a significant platform for opposition leaders, potentially attracting aspirants from divided PDP factions seeking a credible route to contest the presidency and governorships. Analysts warn, however, that without rapid consolidation and clear strategy, fragmented opposition efforts may weaken the overall challenge to the APC in 2027.
