Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigerian forward, Victor Boniface, will undergo knee surgery today, January 10, a move that rules him out for the remainder of the 2025-2026 season.
The 25-year-old, currently on loan at Werder Bremen from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen, sustained the injury in December and has been sidelined since. Bremen stated that the loan arrangement with Leverkusen will remain valid until the season’s end, despite his extended absence.
Before the setback, Boniface had made 11 league appearances for Bremen, providing two assists and gradually finding form, only for the injury to interrupt his campaign.
In other football news, Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey is reportedly drawing strong interest from Italy, with Serie A giants Inter Milan keeping a close watch on his situation.
Bassey, who joined Fulham from Dutch side Ajax in 2023, has been a standout performer in the Premier League. Comfortable at both centre-back and left-back, the Nigeria international is now considered one of the league’s most reliable defenders.
Reports indicate that Inter Milan are keen to bolster their defence and have identified Bassey as a potential target. However, Fulham are reluctant to let him leave during the winter transfer window, with any move more likely in the summer, once a suitable replacement has been secured.
Bassey is currently on international duty with Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Fulham teammates Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze.
