The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has addressed circulating claims that Rivers State had struck a formal pact with President Bola Tinubu. Speaking during a “thank-you” visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Sunday, Wike clarified that no written or verbal agreement existed prior to the 2023 presidential election.
According to Wike, the support Rivers State extended to Tinubu was purely voluntary and driven by confidence in his leadership, rather than a pre-negotiated arrangement. He emphasized that the President only requested their backing and assured the people that they would not regret it.
“We never entered any written or verbal agreement with the President. We never sat with Mr. President to sign anything. All he told us was, ‘Support me, and you will not regret it,’” Wike stated, dismissing suggestions of an official deal.
He further noted that Tinubu has shown his appreciation by placing a Rivers indigene in a key position in the Federal Capital Territory, describing it as a tangible expression of trust and recognition of the state’s contribution to his electoral victory.
Wike stressed that the President’s actions reflect his commitment and goodwill toward Rivers State, adding that the appropriate response from the people is gratitude and continued prayers for his leadership. He indicated that Rivers residents intend to honor and recognize Tinubu’s role at the appropriate time during the next electoral cycle, provided circumstances allow.
The minister’s remarks sought to quash speculation that Rivers State’s support in 2023 involved any quid pro quo, highlighting instead a relationship based on mutual respect and political trust. Analysts suggest this clarification is likely aimed at curbing narratives that could politicize the state’s influence and its perceived alignment with the presidency ahead of 2027.
Wike concluded by reaffirming Rivers State’s intention to maintain goodwill and strategic cooperation with the federal government, signaling that while no formal pact exists, the state will continue to engage constructively with national leadership.
