The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has raised serious concerns over reports of crowd disturbances and alleged physical altercations involving supporters during and after the Matchday 20 encounter between Remo Stars and Ikorodu City in Ikenne on Wednesday, January 14.
The league described the situation as particularly disappointing, given that a reconciliation meeting had been held prior to the game, with senior officials from both clubs in attendance.
NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, stated that the league had carefully reviewed reports and video footage related to the incident and emphasized that decisive action would be taken.
“In light of the reports and video evidence in our possession, the NPFL is inviting both clubs to an investigative hearing on Monday, January 19, at our Abuja office,” the league’s statement read.
Owumi explained that the hearing would allow the league to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident, adding that sanctions would be enforced where accountability is established. He reiterated that the safety of fans remains a top priority for the league.
Meanwhile, attention now turns to the NPFL Matchday 21 fixtures scheduled across the country. Kano Pillars will host Abia Warriors at 15:30, while Rivers United face Remo Stars at 16:00. Enyimba will take on Barau, and Bendel Insurance will meet El-Kanemi Warriors at the same time.
