Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has strongly criticised the violent attack reportedly carried out against Pedro Obaseki, describing the incident as a dangerous assault that endangered the victim’s life and raised serious questions about public safety and law enforcement conduct.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in Benin City, Edo State, has sparked public concern following claims that Obaseki — a relative of former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki — was attacked while participating in a routine football activity.
Violent Incident Sparks Legal Outrage
According to accounts of the event, a group of suspected thugs allegedly stormed a football field located at Uwa Primary School on Igbesamwan Street, where Obaseki was said to be playing. The attackers reportedly subjected him to humiliation and physical violence before taking him away from the scene.
Falana, speaking during a television interview, described the attack as a serious criminal act rather than a minor disturbance, arguing that the circumstances suggested a coordinated assault.
He alleged that the victim was forcefully seized, physically abused, and publicly humiliated, actions he said constitute grave violations under Nigerian law.
Questions Raised Over Police Handling
Beyond condemning the attackers, the senior advocate expressed concern about the response of security authorities. He claimed that individuals who delivered Obaseki to a police station were allegedly not required to provide formal statements, yet the victim himself was reportedly detained.
Falana questioned why none of the suspected perpetrators were immediately arrested, noting that such a response could undermine public confidence in law enforcement procedures.
He emphasized that any credible investigation must examine both the conduct of the attackers and the actions taken by officers following the incident.
Fundamental Rights Allegedly Breached
The legal practitioner argued that the events described represent multiple infringements of constitutional rights, including protection of dignity, personal liberty, and safety of life.
He further alleged that gunshots were reportedly fired to disperse witnesses at the scene, adding that authorities must determine whether those involved were legally permitted to possess firearms.
According to Falana, public humiliation and violent assault go beyond ordinary criminal behaviour and should attract thorough legal scrutiny.
Call for Accountability
Falana maintained that justice requires identifying and prosecuting those responsible while ensuring the victim’s rights are fully protected. He warned that failure to address such incidents decisively could embolden criminal elements and weaken the rule of law.
He stressed that individuals must feel safe engaging in everyday activities without fear of mob violence or unlawful treatment.
Commentary & Analysis
The controversy surrounding the alleged attack highlights persistent concerns about mob justice, political tensions, and security accountability in Nigeria. Incidents involving public humiliation or vigilante-style violence often expose gaps in policing standards and crisis response mechanisms.
Falana’s reaction reflects a broader debate about citizens’ constitutional protections and the responsibility of law enforcement to safeguard victims rather than appear complicit through inaction.
Ultimately, the case may test institutional commitment to human rights enforcement. Transparent investigation and legal accountability could play a crucial role in restoring public trust and reinforcing the principle that no individual’s safety should be compromised in a democratic society.
