A former Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has expressed the view that both President Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should not participate in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that Nigeria urgently requires a new generation of leadership.

Baba-Ahmed made the remarks on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a political programme aired on Channels Television.

According to him, both political figures owe the country a responsibility to create space for fresh leadership, insisting that Nigeria would be better served if they allowed citizens to choose from a broader pool of emerging leaders.

He explained that stepping aside would widen the political landscape and offer Nigerians more credible and diverse options for national leadership.

Baba-Ahmed further argued that President Tinubu may lack the capacity to continue governing beyond 2027, noting that the President would have completed a full four-year term by that time.

In his view, Nigeria would benefit more from being led by someone younger, healthier, and more focused on the demands of governance.

He said President Tinubu should consider handing over leadership after his first term to an individual with the energy and focus required to address the country’s pressing challenges.

The former presidential adviser expressed similar sentiments regarding Atiku Abubakar, maintaining that the former vice president also has a duty to the nation not to seek the presidency again.

“I once said in an interview that if it were up to me, there are two people who should not run in 2027,” Baba-Ahmed said. “They are President Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. They have an opportunity to give Nigerians the freedom to choose the best possible candidates.”

Explaining his position, he added that President Tinubu may have exhausted his capacity to continue governing beyond 2027, stressing that the President would have achieved his lifelong ambition by serving one full term.

“By 2027, he would have completed four years in office. That would be the best time for him to say, ‘Nigeria needs someone younger, healthier, and more committed to governance,’” Baba-Ahmed stated.

He added that the same reasoning applies to Atiku Abubakar, insisting that both men owe Nigerians the responsibility of allowing new leadership to emerge.

“The country needs fresh blood and a renewed sense of direction,” he said, adding that Nigeria requires a new lease of political life.
