The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mohamed Buba Marwa, has unveiled the agency’s operational focus for 2026, urging commanders nationwide to intensify efforts aimed at dismantling drug cartels and expanding public sensitisation initiatives.

This directive was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, and made available to Gossip News Now.

During a high-level strategic meeting at the NDLEA National Headquarters in Abuja, Marwa addressed directors, state commanders, and heads of operational units, calling on them to sustain the agency’s current momentum in combating illicit drug trafficking. He stressed the need for decisive actions to break drug syndicates and expand awareness campaigns across communities.

In attendance were senior management officials, zonal commanders, state and FCT commanders, heads of seaports and international airport commands, the Marine Unit Commander, Strike Force and Special Operations Unit commanders, among others.

Marwa noted that the agency entered 2026 on a strong footing, building on record-setting achievements in previous years. He described the new year as a period of strategic consolidation, particularly in the areas of Drug Supply Reduction (DSR) and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR).

He explained that while the accomplishments of the previous year were commendable, there is no room for complacency. According to him, the agency’s central objective for 2026 is to disrupt the financial structures sustaining drug cartels while ensuring that every Nigerian community receives adequate education on the dangers of substance abuse.

The NDLEA boss also directed all commands to ensure effective execution of the agency’s strategic work plan for the year.

Reflecting on his tenure, Marwa recalled the commitments he made upon assuming office to confront drug kingpins head-on, attributing the agency’s progress to collective dedication and divine guidance.

He noted that although the agency has recorded notable successes over the past five years, greater achievements remain the goal. He expressed pride in the growing local and international recognition accorded to the NDLEA, encouraging officers to continue upholding professionalism and excellence.

Marwa further stated that the renewal of his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflects the hard work and tangible results delivered by officers on the field, including seizures, arrests, and convictions, which form the backbone of public accountability.

Setting clear performance expectations for the year, he emphasised the importance of discipline, professionalism, and zero tolerance for compromise. He urged commanders to prioritise intelligence gathering, surveillance, and careful planning before conducting operations, adding that reinforcement should be sought when operational capacity is limited to prevent unnecessary casualties.

He commended the progress recorded in advocacy and sensitisation, especially within schools and local communities, and called for a significant scale-up of such efforts nationwide.

Marwa also directed the strengthening of State Drug Control Committees across all states, with outreach extended to local government and ward levels, stressing that functional committees must be established nationwide in 2026.

Reassuring the public, the NDLEA chairman affirmed the agency’s renewed commitment to safeguarding Nigerian youths and families from the devastating effects of drug abuse. He added that the agency’s early momentum in 2026 sends a strong warning to drug traffickers that there will be no room to operate.

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue providing actionable intelligence to the agency, emphasising that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires collective responsibility.
