The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow following the sudden passing of Mr. Sunday Ndidi, father of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, who reportedly died in a road accident on Tuesday.

According to reports, Mr. Ndidi, a retired military personnel, was involved in a fatal traffic incident in Umunede, close to Agbor in Delta State. He was immediately taken to a medical facility in Agbor, where he was later confirmed dead by attending doctors.

Reacting to the heartbreaking development, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, described the incident as devastating and deeply painful.

“This is truly heartbreaking. Wilfred only recently gave his all for the nation at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where we secured a bronze medal. He returned to Turkey with renewed determination, eager to help his club win trophies this season and continue contributing to the Super Eagles’ progress,” Sanusi said.

He added, “We are still in shock and at a loss for words, but we sincerely pray for the peaceful rest of Mr. Sunday Ndidi’s soul. May Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to our team captain, his family, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.”

The sad news was also confirmed by Ndidi’s Turkish club, Besiktas, which shared a condolence message via 𝕏.

“May Allah grant mercy to the departed. We extend our deepest sympathies to our player Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and all those grieving at this difficult time,” the club stated.

Ndidi, who recently took over the Super Eagles captaincy from William Troost-Ekong, was instrumental in Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The midfielder also netted his first-ever goal for the national team during the tournament and dedicated the celebration to his late father and former Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo.
