Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed recent remarks by former Senator Magnus Abe, who declared Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike as the APC leader in Rivers State, calling them “inconsequential.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Eze clarified that both Abe and Wike are not members of the APC and therefore lack the authority to speak on matters concerning the party.

“Abe left the APC ahead of the 2023 elections to contest the governorship under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where he failed to win even at his own polling unit, 10, Ward 16, Bera Town, Gokana LGA. Similarly, the FCT Minister has remained party-less since his expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party,” Eze said.

He added, “During the 2023 elections, while serving as Governor, the FCT Minister could not secure a win for his preferred presidential candidate in his own unit, where the Labour Party dominated. Given these facts, the fuss over party leadership is unnecessary. Leadership within a political party is reserved exclusively for bona fide members.”

Eze dismissed Abe’s statement as a dramatic and ill-informed attempt to stir controversy, noting that in 2019, Wike, then Governor, allegedly used Abe, with support from a compromised judiciary, to disrupt APC’s participation in Rivers State elections.

“Through these thoughtless remarks and his continued association with Wike, Magnus Abe has embarrassed himself and disappointed those who once respected him,” Eze said.

He added, “It is shameful that a formerly respected political figure from the Niger Delta appears to misunderstand party hierarchy. By declaring Wike as Rivers State APC leader, despite Wike not being a member, Abe exposes himself to ridicule and undermines President Tinubu and the party leadership.

“The APC leadership, including President Tinubu, has officially recognised Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the party leader in Rivers State. Abe’s claim is baseless, childish, and designed solely to seek favour and attention from Nyesom Wike.”
