Strong reactions have followed Karim Benzema’s surprise move from Al-Ittihad to Saudi Pro League rivals Al-Hilal, with sections of the club’s fanbase voicing their anger in dramatic fashion.

Footage shared widely on social media shows disgruntled supporters burning shirts bearing the French striker’s name, a symbolic protest against his decision to join a direct title challenger after spending two and a half seasons with Al-Ittihad.

Benzema completed the move as a free agent after opting not to extend his contract with Al-Ittihad. Shortly after his departure was confirmed, the former Real Madrid captain addressed fans in a farewell message posted on 𝕏, reflecting on his spell at the club and expressing appreciation for the support he received.

He described his time at Al-Ittihad as a meaningful chapter in his career, stating that the respect and gratitude he felt for the club, his teammates, staff and supporters would remain with him. Benzema added that he was proud to have worn the club’s colours and of everything achieved together during his stay.

The 38-year-old also noted that the journey contributed to his growth both on and off the pitch, wishing the club continued success in the future while signing off with a message of respect.

Benzema originally joined Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023 and went on to play a key role in the club’s Saudi Pro League title triumph during the 2024/2025 season, featuring alongside high-profile teammates such as N’Golo Kanté and Fabinho.

Despite his age, the striker remained a major influence, registering 16 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions this season, underlining his continued importance on the field.

However, reports suggest Benzema rejected Al-Ittihad’s renewal offer after feeling the terms did not reflect his value, a decision that has now triggered backlash from fans who once regarded him as one of the club’s defining figures.
