Owen Doubts Arsenal Can Sweep All Trophies As Merson Raises Midfield Concerns

Former England striker Michael Owen has expressed scepticism over Arsenal’s ability to claim all four major trophies this season, despite the club’s commanding presence across domestic and European competitions.

Speaking after the Gunners sealed a 4–2 aggregate win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, Owen argued that the sheer intensity of competing on multiple fronts will eventually test Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League, finished their UEFA Champions League group with a flawless record, and are set to take on Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round, underlining what has been an impressive campaign so far.

While Owen acknowledged that league glory appears increasingly within reach and suggested the Carabao Cup is also a realistic target, he warned that the remaining competitions present a far sterner challenge.

He noted that rival clubs are likely to prioritise the FA Cup as a chance to rescue their seasons, meaning Arsenal can expect strong opposition throughout the knockout stages. Owen also described the Champions League as completely unpredictable, stressing that any of the remaining contenders could emerge victorious.

As optimism builds around Arsenal’s title push, club legend Paul Merson has offered a more critical assessment, turning his attention to the team’s midfield performance during their narrow 1–0 victory over Chelsea in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Although Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal, Merson felt the midfield unit failed to dominate proceedings. He singled out Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze, suggesting the trio struggled to assert themselves against Chelsea’s central players.

Merson argued that Arsenal were matched, and at times outperformed, in midfield, while also noting that Enzo Fernández was ineffective when deployed on the left flank in the first half, coming up against one of Arsenal’s stronger defenders, Jurrien Timber.
