Akpabio’s Assessment Of Nigeria’s Security Situation

Speaking after a visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, Akpabio said the country was making progress despite the challenges confronting it.

The Senate President said the administration’s reforms were working and linked them to what he described as an improvement in the country’s security situation.

“We believe he’s doing well. These reforms are working and, as far as we are concerned, insecurities are abating, and people are able to sleep well,” Akpabio said.

His assessment formed part of remarks made after a high-level delegation from the National Assembly visited Tinubu at his Lagos residence.

Why The National Assembly Delegation Visited Tinubu

Akpabio led the National Assembly delegation, which included Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, to visit the President.

The visit was held on Friday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Explaining the purpose of the visit, Akpabio said the lawmakers came to pay their respects to the country through the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

“We are happy with the fact that Nigeria has met 66 years. So we came to pay a visit to Nigeria through the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” he said.

The remarks placed the visit within the broader context of Nigeria’s independence anniversary and the relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government.

Akpabio Acknowledges Political Discontent

While expressing confidence in the administration’s direction, Akpabio acknowledged that challenges and pockets of discontent remained.

He attributed some of the tension to the proximity of the election period, saying political activity could contribute to what he described as mischief.

“We still have pockets of discontent here and there because of the fact that this is almost election time. A lot of mischief and all that.”

Akpabio nevertheless said his hope remained that Nigeria would continue to improve.

“But at the end, our prayer always is that Nigeria shall be better, and God will help him to make Nigeria, beyond 66 years, a better country,” Akpabio said.

His comments combined an expression of support for the administration with an acknowledgement that political and social challenges persist.

Akpabio Points To Nigeria’s Resilience

The Senate President also reflected on Nigeria’s continued existence as one country, describing national unity as evidence of the country’s resilience.

He said the fact that Nigeria remained united demonstrated the strength of the country.

“That we are still together shows the resilience of this country. That Nigeria is still one. It shows the resilience of this country.”

Akpabio further spoke about the role of faith in the country’s national life, describing Nigerians as a praying people regardless of religious affiliation.

“We are a praying nation. Whether you are a Muslim or you are a Christian, we are a praying nation. And God can never forsake us.”

He also expressed his belief that God would not forsake the President.

What Akpabio Said About Tinubu’s Administration

Beyond the security situation, Akpabio said the Tinubu administration was doing its best while considering the circumstances it inherited.

He said the government remained determined to improve the country.

“So the administration is doing its best, considering the situation we took when we came about. And we are prepared and determined to make the country better.”

The statement represents Akpabio’s assessment of the administration’s performance rather than an independent measurement of the government’s results.

National Assembly Pledges Continued Support

Akpabio also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to working with the Tinubu administration.

He said lawmakers intended to remain partners to the government and maintained that their actions were aimed at serving Nigerians.

“On the part of the National Assembly, we want to continue to remain worthy partners to the administration of President Bola Tinubu.”

He added that the legislature believed its work was being carried out in the interest of Nigerians.
