Dangote Refinery Speaks Out Over Claims Of Importing Refined Petrol And Diesel

Spread the love

Fresh controversy surrounding the operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals (DPRP) has prompted the company to publicly defend its refining process after reports claimed the facility imports finished petroleum products into Nigeria.

The refinery has now dismissed those allegations, insisting that critics misunderstand how modern international refineries operate.

Dangote Refinery Clarifies Fuel Production Process

During a media engagement held at the massive refinery complex, company officials explained that the facility works with both crude oil and intermediate feedstocks commonly used within the global refining industry.

Executives stressed that importing semi-processed materials should not be mistaken for bringing fully refined petrol or diesel into the country.

According to David Bird, the refinery’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, the facility follows internationally accepted refinery systems similar to what is obtainable across Europe and Asia.

He explained that the refinery transforms crude oil and industrial feedstocks into premium petroleum products that meet global standards.

Company Rejects Claims Of Selling Imported Finished Fuel

The management of the refinery insisted that only completed and market-ready fuel products are released into circulation for public use.

Officials also stated that intermediate products cannot be used directly by consumers because they still require further refining and blending before becoming suitable for vehicles or industrial use.

To further support its explanation, journalists who visited the refinery were reportedly shown samples differentiating unfinished feedstocks from final refined products.

Fuel Products Meet International Standards

The refinery management also highlighted the environmental quality of its fuel products.

According to the company, the petrol produced at the refinery is free from lead and harmful additives, while diesel products meet ultra-low sulphur standards required internationally.

The management stated that these standards help reduce environmental pollution, protect engines, and improve public health outcomes.

Gossip News Now reports that the company believes modern refining technology is critical in positioning Nigeria as a major producer of cleaner petroleum products.

Dangote Refinery Says Products Are Exported Abroad

Officials further disclosed that some refined products from the refinery are already being exported to foreign destinations, describing this as proof that the facility meets competitive international quality benchmarks.

The refinery listed several industrial materials including reformate, alkylate, vacuum gas oil, and naphtha as intermediate feedstocks processed further into finished fuel products.

Management maintained that such refining systems are standard practice globally and should not be misrepresented.

Concerns Raised Over Public Misunderstanding

Speaking during the engagement, David Bird criticised what he described as deliberate misinformation about the refinery’s operations.

He argued that inaccurate narratives could create confusion among Nigerians who may not fully understand technical refining processes.

The refinery boss also stated that the company was established partly to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on substandard imported fuels.

Refinery Highlights Economic Benefits

Company officials also linked the refinery’s operations to broader economic benefits within Nigeria’s energy sector.

Management claimed the facility has contributed to easing fuel shortages, improving local supply stability, and reducing pressure on foreign exchange demand.

The refinery added that its flexible production structure allows it to refine multiple grades of crude oil efficiently.

Call For Accurate Media Reporting

Also addressing journalists, Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Brand and Communications Officer of Dangote Industries Limited, appealed for responsible reporting within the oil and gas sector.

He warned that technical refinery terms are sometimes misunderstood or wrongly interpreted, leading to misleading public narratives.

According to him, accurate communication remains important in helping Nigerians understand the difference between intermediate refining materials and finished petroleum products.

Commentary And Analysis

The latest response from Dangote Refinery highlights the growing public attention surrounding Nigeria’s petroleum industry and energy independence efforts.

As the refinery expands operations, debates around fuel sourcing, refining systems, and product quality are expected to remain major topics within the country’s economic and industrial discussions.

Industry observers believe clearer public education on refinery operations may help reduce confusion while improving trust in local petroleum production.
