Human rights campaigner and former presidential contender, Omoyele Sowore, has publicly backed activist Aisha Yesufu following her decision to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The activist-turned-politician described Yesufu’s move into partisan politics as a positive development, stressing that individuals who constantly advocate for national change should also be willing to participate directly in governance.

Sowore Welcomes Yesufu’s Political Decision

Speaking during a television interview on Monday, Sowore explained that he had long encouraged committed activists to move beyond public criticism and become active participants in the political process.

He recalled that Aisha Yesufu previously maintained that activism and elective politics should remain separate, often criticizing campaigners who chose to seek public office after years of activism.

However, Sowore said her recent decision suggests she may now see politics differently.

Disagreement Over Party Choice

Despite expressing support for her senatorial ambition, Sowore admitted he was disappointed by the political platform she eventually aligned with.

According to Gossip News Now reports that Yesufu reportedly moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) into the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Sowore insisted he would have preferred seeing her join his own political movement instead.

He noted that while political affiliations may differ, he remains supportive of people who genuinely desire reforms and are willing to enter the electoral arena.

‘Politics Is Also Activism’ — Sowore

The former presidential candidate used the opportunity to explain his long-held belief that activism alone may not be enough to transform society.

According to him, real institutional reforms often require participation within the political structure itself.

Sowore explained that he once shared the same reluctance toward politics before eventually realizing that governance remains one of the strongest tools for social change.

He suggested that many activists eventually come to understand that direct political participation offers another avenue to pursue justice, accountability, and reforms.

Growing Attention Around Yesufu’s Senate Ambition

The declaration by Aisha Yesufu has already generated reactions across political and civil society circles, especially considering her visibility during national advocacy campaigns over the years.

Many observers believe her entry into electoral politics could reshape conversations around activism, governance, and citizen participation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Her decision also adds another layer to the evolving political realignments currently taking place among opposition figures and advocacy groups in Nigeria.

Commentary And Analysis

Political analysts say Sowore’s endorsement reflects a broader trend where prominent activists are increasingly transitioning into mainstream politics.

Observers argue that Nigeria’s political environment is gradually attracting more public commentators, rights advocates, and social movement leaders who believe policy change cannot happen solely through protests and media engagement.

The development may also intensify debates about whether activism loses its independence once individuals become active politicians, or whether entering politics simply represents the next stage of advocacy.

For many younger Nigerians, the growing involvement of activists in electoral politics could influence voter engagement and reshape campaign narratives ahead of the next election cycle.
