Social Media Has Turned Into a Hub for Online Begging – Yhemolee

Nigerian actor and nightlife personality Idowu Adeyemi, popularly known as Yhemolee, has expressed concern over the rising wave of online begging across social media platforms.

According to Gossip News Now, the actor took to his Instagram page to lament how social media—originally designed for connection, creativity, and interaction—has gradually transformed into a space where many people now solicit money from strangers.

Yhemolee observed that a growing number of users have become highly skilled at asking for financial assistance online, blurring the line between street begging and digital solicitation. The only real difference, he quipped, is that “online beggars have internet data.

He pointed out that social media posts, rather than attracting normal engagement such as comments or likes, are now often flooded with bank account numbers from people seeking financial help.

Expressing his frustration, Yhemolee criticized those who have “perfected the art of online begging” and urged them to stay away from his posts.

“It’s no longer news that social media isn’t social media anymore — it’s now a begging site,” he wrote.
“The only difference is that, unlike beggars on the road, the beggars on the internet have data. These days, when you post a picture, the first ten comments are account numbers. My major problem is those who have a PhD in begging. Please, omit all those begging from my own picture.”

His remarks have sparked widespread reactions online, with many users agreeing that social media begging has become increasingly common, especially amid the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
