Senate Shake-Up: Niger South Lawmaker Peter Jiya Switches From PDP To APC

Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber has recorded another political shift as Peter Jiya, the senator representing Niger South Senatorial District, officially exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made during a plenary session after Senate President Godswill Akpabio presented a formal communication from the lawmaker, notifying colleagues of his decision to change party affiliation.

Explaining his move in a restructured account of his message, Peter Jiya pointed to deep-seated disagreements and unresolved internal conflicts within the PDP, noting that the situation had made it increasingly difficult to remain within the party. He indicated that persistent divisions had created an environment lacking unity and direction.

According to Gossip News Now, the senator clarified that his resignation from the opposition party took effect earlier in March, emphasizing that the decision followed careful consideration of the ongoing instability within the party’s structure.

In further remarks, he highlighted his intention to continue his political career under the platform of the APC, suggesting that the move would provide a more stable environment for his legislative responsibilities and future ambitions.

While moving on, Peter Jiya also acknowledged the role the PDP played in his political journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunity it gave him to serve both his constituents and the nation. He, however, subtly noted that the party’s future success would depend on its ability to resolve its internal issues.

Following his defection, the numerical balance in the Senate has shifted further in favor of the ruling party. The APC now holds a commanding majority, while other parties maintain smaller representations across the chamber.

For clarity, the current Senate composition reflects a dominant presence of the APC, alongside smaller blocs from parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), PDP, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the National Democratic Coalition (NDC). Meanwhile, three seats remain unoccupied due to the passing of former senators.

Commentary & Analysis

The defection of Peter Jiya underscores a growing pattern within Nigeria’s political system, where internal party crises often trigger shifts in allegiance. Such movements not only affect party strength but also influence legislative dynamics and policy direction.

It also reflects the strategic calculations politicians make when navigating unstable political environments. Aligning with a dominant party can offer greater influence and access, particularly in a system where majority control plays a key role in decision-making.

As more lawmakers reconsider their positions ahead of future elections, the stability and internal cohesion of political parties will remain a critical factor shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
