The internal rift within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken another legal turn as Samuel Anyanwu, a key figure within one of the party’s factions, moves to overturn his expulsion through the appellate court.
The former party official formally lodged his appeal after a previous ruling by a High Court in the Federal Capital Territory validated the disciplinary measures taken against him. Dissatisfied with that outcome, Anyanwu is now seeking judicial reconsideration, arguing that the earlier decision failed to properly evaluate the circumstances surrounding his case.
Gossip News Now recalls that the dispute traces back to a disciplinary process initiated by a committee led by Tom Ikimi, which examined allegations of anti-party conduct. The panel ultimately recommended his removal from the party after determining that he did not sufficiently engage with the proceedings.
However, Anyanwu has pushed back strongly against that narrative. In reframing his argument, he suggested that the judicial endorsement of the committee’s decision overlooked critical procedural concerns, particularly around fairness and due process.
At the heart of his appeal are multiple legal objections. Among them is his contention that the court wrongly concluded that he had not exhausted internal mechanisms before seeking legal intervention. He also challenged the view that the judiciary should refrain from scrutinizing the actions of party organs.
The controversy surrounding his expulsion is part of a broader disciplinary action that also affected prominent figures such as Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose, alongside other members during a national gathering of the party in Ibadan.
Meanwhile, the PDP continues to grapple with deepening factional divisions. Competing groups within the party, including those aligned with Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and Abdulrahman Mohammed, remain locked in legal battles over leadership and control of party structures.
Commentary and Analysis
The legal challenge initiated by Samuel Anyanwu underscores the fragile state of unity within the PDP. As internal disputes spill into the courts, the party risks further weakening its cohesion ahead of future elections.
Beyond the immediate case, the situation raises broader questions about internal democracy within political parties and the balance between disciplinary authority and individual rights. If not carefully managed, these recurring conflicts could diminish the PDP’s credibility as a viable opposition force.
With multiple lawsuits and rival factions still asserting dominance, the outcome of this appeal may not only determine Anyanwu’s political future but also influence the party’s ability to present a united front moving forward.
