African Action Congress presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has questioned the credibility of the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that the alliance is largely made up of politicians seeking political power rather than genuine national transformation.
During a television interview on Monday, the activist dismissed suggestions that the coalition represents a united ideological movement capable of changing Nigeria’s political direction. According to him, many of the individuals involved were previously part of the system they now criticize.
Sowore Questions Motives Behind Coalition Talks
Speaking on national television, Sowore argued that Nigerians should not confuse political alliances with genuine reform movements.
He maintained that the current coalition discussions revolve more around political ambition than a clear vision for rebuilding the country. He also suggested that many of the politicians involved contributed to the same governance failures Nigerians are currently complaining about.
According to Gossip News Now, the activist insisted that real political change can only happen when ordinary citizens collectively demand accountability rather than relying solely on elite political arrangements.
Reference To 2015 Political Shift
While reflecting on the political transition that removed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in 2015, Sowore stated that public frustration played a bigger role than party mergers.
According to him, Nigerians were already tired of the ruling establishment at the time and simply wanted a different direction for the country.
He argued that public dissatisfaction, not merely political calculations, was what created the momentum for change during that election period.
Sowore Supports Aisha Yesufu’s Senate Ambition
Amid his criticism of the coalition, Sowore expressed excitement over activist Aisha Yesufu’s decision to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in 2027.
He described her move into active politics as a welcome development, stressing that citizens who believe they can contribute meaningfully should not avoid public office.
However, the activist admitted he disagreed with her decision to align politically with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Reports indicate that Yesufu recently moved alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi into the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Activism And Politics Should Work Together
Sowore used the discussion to explain why he believes activism and politics should not be separated.
He revealed that there was a period when he personally believed politics was not necessary for activists. Over time, however, he concluded that participating directly in governance remains one of the strongest ways to influence societal change.
The activist noted that many campaigners eventually realize that advocacy alone may not be enough to solve national problems without political participation.
In another part of the interview, Sowore jokingly remarked that he wished Aisha Yesufu had joined his own political platform instead.
Commentary And Analysis
Political observers believe Sowore’s remarks reflect the growing divisions among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
While some politicians are focused on building broad coalitions capable of challenging the ruling party, others argue that many alliances lack ideological direction and are simply platforms for political survival.
Analysts also say Sowore’s support for Yesufu highlights the increasing movement of activists into mainstream politics, a trend that could significantly influence youth participation and civic engagement in future elections.
At the same time, debates continue over whether opposition unity can truly emerge without clear policy agreements and mutual trust among political actors.
