Ikorodu City Move Closer to NPFL Top Spot with Away Win Over Warri Wolves

Ikorodu City continued their impressive rise in the Nigeria Premier Football League on Sunday with a confident 2-0 victory over Warri Wolves, a result that kept their title dream firmly on course and pushed them closer to the teams above them on the table.

The Oga Boys wasted little time stamping their authority on the contest at Ozoro Stadium. Tomisin Adebayo struck first in the 18th minute to hand the visitors an early advantage, and just before the break, Goodluck Anuba added a second goal that effectively gave Ikorodu City control of the game.

By the final whistle, the Lagos-based side had not only secured all three points but also extended their unbeaten run to seven matches. Their recent form has become one of the strongest in the division, with four wins from their last five league outings.

According to Gossip News Now, that latest result lifted Ikorodu City to third place on 21 points. They now sit only two points behind leaders Nasarawa United and trail second-placed Abia Warriors by a single point, making the top of the table even more competitive.

Elsewhere, Rangers returned to winning ways in Enugu with a narrow 1-0 victory over Shooting Stars. Chidozie Iwundu produced the decisive moment in the 27th minute, helping the Flying Antelopes climb to 10th position on 16 points. Shooting Stars remain on the same number of points, but Rangers moved ahead on goal difference.

In Umuahia, the much-anticipated Abia Derby between Abia Warriors and Enyimba failed to produce a goal. Neither side managed to find the breakthrough in what was their 20th meeting in the top flight. The draw allowed Abia Warriors to remain second on 22 points, while Enyimba stayed sixth with 17.

Top spot remains in the hands of Nasarawa United, though they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against Kwara United. Anas Yusuf had given the Solid Miners the perfect start with a goal in the second minute, but Aule Johnmark later restored parity for the visitors, ensuring the points were shared.

In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists left it late but still found a way to edge Niger Tornadoes 1-0. Nasiru Jibrin’s 87th-minute winner proved enough to seal victory and move Wikki up to 12th place on 16 points, keeping them tightly packed among the mid-table sides.

Kano Pillars, however, could not improve their situation, as they played out a goalless draw against Bayelsa United at their temporary base in Katsina. The former champions remain rooted to the bottom of the standings with just six points after 11 matches, a worrying return for a club of their stature.

Saturday’s only fixture had already produced drama, with Katsina United and Barau FC battling to a 1-1 draw. The match later drew wider attention because of the violent scenes that disrupted proceedings after Barau’s equaliser.

Matchday 12 is not yet fully complete, with three more games scheduled for Monday. Remo Stars are set to host El-Kanemi Warriors in Abeokuta, Kun Khalifat will face Rivers United in Owerri, while Plateau United take on Bendel Insurance in Jos.

Commentary and Analysis

Ikorodu City’s victory is another sign that they are no longer just enjoying a good run but are becoming genuine contenders in the title conversation. Winning away from home with such efficiency often separates ambitious teams from ordinary ones.

What also stands out is how tight the table has become. With Nasarawa United, Abia Warriors, and Ikorodu City all clustered near the summit, every point now carries extra weight and a single result can quickly reshape the standings.

At the other end, Kano Pillars’ continued struggles remain one of the season’s biggest concerns. While teams above them are building momentum, Pillars are still searching for consistency and risk falling deeper into trouble if results do not improve soon.
