Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford have been added to the England squad following injuries to Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope.
The Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that Gordon withdrew due to a hip problem, while Pope was sidelined after sustaining a concussion.
“Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Manchester City’s James Trafford have been added to the England squad. This follows the withdrawal of Newcastle United duo Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope through injury and concussion respectively,” the FA said in a statement.
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi has also joined the squad, despite carrying a minor foot issue from his club’s recent European clash against AZ Alkmaar. The FA noted that Guéhi “will continue to be assessed in the coming days.”
The Three Lions are currently training at Tottenham Hotspur’s facilities as they prepare for Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia at Wembley, followed by an away fixture against Albania on Sunday. England have already secured qualification for next summer’s tournament.
Chalobah’s recall is a notable milestone for the 26-year-old, who made his England debut in May against Senegal but had missed recent squads. The Chelsea defender has been in strong form this season, featuring in all but four of the club’s matches. The Blues are third in the Premier League and remain active in both the Carabao Cup and Champions League.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who gave Chalobah his club debut in 2021, has frequently praised the defender’s discipline and consistency. Chalobah will now aim to solidify his place in the national team setup.
