Former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eddy Olafeso, has accused individuals behind the legal obstruction of the party’s planned national convention of trying to establish a one-party system in Nigeria.
Olafeso made the claim on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, describing the court order halting the PDP convention as “the climax of judicial rascality.”
Reacting to the Federal High Court’s injunction barring the PDP from holding its national convention, originally scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Olafeso said the party was not surprised by the ruling, calling it part of a wider scheme to destabilize the opposition.
He stated, “The restraining order from the Federal High Court today against our scheduled convention did not come as a shock to us. A group is focused on ensuring that they destroy the party completely, but we will not allow it. Good will prevail over evil.”
Olafeso affirmed that the PDP remains determined and would not be swayed by the court’s decision.
“We will not allow this. I’m energized, like many of our colleagues, that this shall not stand. The truth and justice must prevail,” he added.
‘They Want To Undermine the Opposition’ – Olafeso
Olafeso accused the critics of the convention of pursuing hidden agendas meant to weaken the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, claiming their actions are part of a calculated plan to favor a single ruling party.
“They have their agenda. It is not for the people. It is to entrench a one-party state, and that cannot occur well for our country,” he said.
He also criticized certain former PDP leaders who, in his view, betrayed the party after achieving political prominence through its platform.
“Many of them were unknown until they became governors. What baffles us is the level of their rebellion against the same party that brought them from obscurity to the limelight,” Olafeso noted.
The former vice chairman expressed confidence that the PDP would withstand what he described as politically motivated attempts to silence it.
“They made promises. Even Governor Sule Lamido said he would stay in the PDP and work for the coalition. Yet, some of them now openly support another party for the 2027 election,” Olafeso added.
