Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, was visibly thrilled as his side secured a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final with an emphatic 4–1 victory over Gabon on Thursday.
From the sidelines, Chelle observed his players executing precisely what he had emphasized in training: focus, teamwork, and unyielding determination.
Sevilla striker Akor Adams broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, calmly slotting home after capitalizing on a loose ball. Gabon, however, fought back, with Mario Lemina equalizing in the 88th minute, keeping the Panthers’ hopes alive.
In the decisive moments, Chelle’s instructions clearly resonated. Substitute Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s advantage early in extra time, finishing neatly from a pass by Wilfred Ndidi. Victor Osimhen then took charge, scoring twice to seal a commanding 4–1 victory.
After the game, Chelle praised his players for their attitude and commitment on the pitch.
“I’m incredibly proud of these players. Every time they focus on what I ask of them, they show it on the field. Today’s key word was passion. My message was about working together with the same goal, and they delivered,” he said.
The victory is especially notable given the tension leading up to the match. The Super Eagles had briefly staged a strike on Tuesday over unpaid bonuses, returning to training just 24 hours before kickoff. Despite the disruption, Chelle’s team rose to the occasion, executing their tactics flawlessly under pressure.
Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba also praised the squad for their resilience. “Despite the challenges, the players responded positively and did the job. The extra-time performance was fantastic. I’m confident they will carry this momentum into the next match. Congratulations to the boys,” Ikpeba said on SuperSport.
Chelle now turns his attention to Sunday’s final against DR Congo, with a chance to secure a spot in the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026 and continue Nigeria’s World Cup journey.
