Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has maintained that he and his team gave their all in Rabat, even as Nigeria’s dreams of reaching the 2026 World Cup were dashed by DR Congo in a tense play-off decided by penalties.
Gossip News Now reports that Nigeria fell 4-3 on penalties at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium on Sunday, bringing a heart-wrenching end to their bid for a spot at the tournament set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Frank Onyeka initially raised Nigerian hopes with a precise finish that put the Eagles ahead. However, DR Congo responded before halftime through Meshak Elia, and the game became increasingly tense. Nigeria struggled to regain control, endured a cautious extra time, and ultimately fell short during the penalty shootout.
This loss marks Nigeria’s second consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup, following their absence in 2022. While questions about the team’s future have already surfaced, Chelle refused to comment on speculation regarding his position.
“When it comes to my job, you should ask the NFF and the commission,” Chelle said when questioned about his future.
“I did well. We worked hard, and I tried to give my best. The players and officials also gave everything they had.”
Chelle took over as head coach in January, guiding the team through the final stages of World Cup qualification. His record in charge included four wins and two draws. Failing to secure automatic qualification meant Nigeria had to go through the African play-offs, where they beat Gabon 4-1 in extra time last Thursday before falling to DR Congo in the final hurdle.
Nigeria’s World Cup history has long been one of high expectations. Since debuting in 1994, the Super Eagles have participated in six tournaments, reaching the round of 16 on three occasions. However, they have now missed the 2006, 2022, and 2026 editions.
With the World Cup dream ended, Nigeria will now focus on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled in Morocco from December 21 to January 19, 2026. The Super Eagles, who were runners-up at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, will aim to secure a fourth continental title under Chelle’s guidance.
