Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has admitted that scoring plenty of goals alone may not be enough to claim football’s most prestigious individual prize, the Ballon d’Or.
Speaking to the UK Mirror, the England captain highlighted the importance of winning major trophies such as the Champions League and the World Cup.
“I could score 100 goals this season, but if I don’t win the Champions League or the World Cup, you’re probably not going to win the Ballon d’Or,” Kane said. “It’s the same with Haaland or any player — you have to be winning those major trophies.”
Kane, 32, is enjoying one of the best starts of his career, already netting 13 goals in the Bundesliga and five in the Champions League, making him one of Europe’s most potent forwards.
Despite his impressive individual form, Kane acknowledges that team success is crucial for personal accolades. Last season, he scored 44 goals in 45 matches for Bayern Munich and led England to the Euro 2024 final, yet still finished 13th in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
Looking ahead, Kane remains confident about Bayern’s European prospects and England’s chances at the 2026 World Cup.
“With the way the season is going with Bayern Munich, we’re in great shape. We look like one of the favourites for the Champions League. Same with England — I think we’ll go into the tournament as one of the favourites,” he added.
A World Cup victory next summer could give Kane a major boost in Ballon d’Or contention, similar to how Rodri won the award in 2024 following Spain’s Euro triumph. A Champions League title would also strengthen his case, provided he maintains his goal-scoring form.
