Taraba Governor Says Political Decision Is Focused on Development
Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has defended his planned move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), maintaining that the decision is motivated by the desire to secure greater benefits and opportunities for the people of the state.
The governor spoke during a cultural event held in Jimeta, Adamawa State, where members of the Margi Nation gathered to celebrate their heritage through the unveiling of a national attire designed to preserve their cultural identity.
Kefas Insists Politics Is Not Driving His Decision
While addressing guests at the ceremony, Agbu Kefas emphasized that his proposed political realignment should not be viewed through the lens of rivalry or personal ambition.
According to the governor, his relationship with Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri remains cordial despite political differences that may emerge from his decision to join the APC.
He suggested that although some individuals may disagree with his choice, he remains convinced that the move serves the broader interests of the people he was elected to represent.
Defection Ceremony Previously Delayed
The governor had initially planned to formally switch political parties in late 2025. However, the ceremony was postponed following a security incident involving the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
His latest remarks indicate that the planned transition remains on course despite public debate surrounding the decision.
Makinde Raises Concerns Over Political Concentration
Away from the discussion on defections, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde used the same event to caution against efforts that could weaken Nigeria’s multi-party democratic structure.
The governor argued that the country’s ethnic, cultural and political diversity makes the emergence of a one-party system highly unlikely.
According to Makinde, Nigeria’s history demonstrates that different groups and regions have distinct political interests, making pluralism a fundamental part of the nation’s democratic character.
Praise for Ahmadu Fintiri’s Political Journey
During his remarks, Seyi Makinde also commended Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, describing him as a leader whose political career reflects years of steady public service.
He highlighted Fintiri’s progression through various legislative leadership roles before eventually becoming governor, noting that his rise illustrates determination and commitment to governance.
The Oyo governor further praised the Margi Nation for publicly recognizing one of their own, describing the event as a remarkable demonstration of unity and appreciation.
PDP Governors Reaffirm Support for Cultural Development
Also present at the gathering was Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
Representing fellow governors within the party, he expressed support for initiatives that promote cultural preservation and strengthen social cohesion across communities.
The Bauchi governor stressed that understanding history plays a critical role in addressing contemporary challenges and building stronger societies.
₦50 Million Support Announced for Cultural Promotion
As part of the event, Bala Mohammed disclosed that the PDP Governors’ Forum would contribute ₦50 million toward projects aimed at supporting cultural growth and heritage preservation in Adamawa State.
The donation was presented as part of broader efforts to encourage unity, identity and community development among cultural groups.
Analysis: Politics and Culture Intersect in Adamawa Gathering
Gossip News Now reports that the event provided more than a celebration of cultural heritage. It also became a platform for major political figures to outline their positions on some of Nigeria’s most pressing political issues.
While Agbu Kefas defended his planned move to the APC as a development-driven decision, Seyi Makinde used the occasion to champion political diversity and caution against excessive concentration of power. At the same time, the support pledged by Bala Mohammed reinforced the continued role of cultural identity in fostering unity and development.
The gathering ultimately showcased how culture and politics often intersect in Nigeria, creating opportunities for leaders to communicate both social and political messages to the public.
