Abure-Led Labour Party Faction Holds Nationwide Congresses Despite Court Order

Internal tensions within the Labour Party have intensified after the faction led by Julius Abure proceeded with nationwide ward congresses despite ongoing legal disputes over party leadership.

The internal exercise, which forms part of the party’s effort to restructure its grassroots leadership, was held across several states of the federation. However, the process did not take place in Abia State, where a court order had earlier been secured by a rival faction linked to Governor Alex Otti.

Officials within the Abure-led structure described the congresses as largely successful, noting that party members turned out in large numbers to participate in the exercise.

According to the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the ward-level gatherings represent the first stage of a broader internal electoral process intended to renew the party’s leadership framework nationwide.

The spokesman explained that additional congresses are scheduled to follow at different administrative levels. Local government congresses are expected to take place shortly after the ward exercise, while state-level congresses are planned to conclude the process.

He also indicated that the decision to begin the congresses was reached during a National Executive Council meeting held late in November, which reportedly included representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Despite the legal controversy surrounding the exercise, the faction said it complied with the court ruling that temporarily halted the process in Abia State. Party officials added that their legal advisers are working to challenge the injunction so that the state can participate in the congress activities at a later date.

According to Gossip News Now, the Abure leadership also accused certain individuals within the party of deliberately spreading misinformation about the congresses in an attempt to undermine the organisation.

Party officials warned that publishing claims suggesting the congresses had been cancelled nationwide was misleading and could carry legal consequences.

Meanwhile, the faction reiterated its intention to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general election, urging supporters to remain focused on strengthening the party’s political structures.

The legal dispute surrounding the congresses stems from a ruling issued by an Abia State High Court in late November. The order temporarily restrained the Abure leadership from conducting nationwide congresses while litigation over the party’s internal leadership dispute continues.

Representatives aligned with the Otti faction have argued that the injunction applies to the congress exercise across the country, insisting that the Abure-led National Working Committee lacks legitimacy to organise the process.

Commentary and Analysis

The ongoing dispute highlights the broader leadership crisis within the Labour Party following its increased national visibility after the 2023 elections. Internal disagreements over authority, party structures, and organisational control have created competing factions within the party.

Political analysts note that unresolved leadership battles can weaken party cohesion and affect its ability to function as a unified political platform.

For the Labour Party, resolving these disputes through either judicial clarification or internal reconciliation may be crucial if it hopes to maintain political momentum ahead of the next election cycle.
