Political reactions have continued to trail the recent move by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to formally associate with the African Democratic Congress, a development that has sparked discussions about possible opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, a faction within the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has insisted that the new alignment does not pose a political threat to the ruling party.

The group’s Director-General, Adesuyi Adojutelegan, made the assertion while addressing party supporters during the inauguration of grassroots coordinators in Okitipupa. According to him, the ruling party remains confident about its chances in the next presidential race.

Adojutelegan stated that even if Atiku eventually emerges as the presidential candidate of the ADC, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would still secure victory in the 2027 general elections.

He further urged party loyalists in the southern senatorial district of Ondo State to intensify political mobilisation at the grassroots level. The APC chieftain encouraged ward and local government coordinators to begin building support networks early as part of preparations for the upcoming electoral cycle.

In defending the administration, Adojutelegan pointed to what he described as progress recorded under Tinubu’s leadership, particularly in areas such as national security initiatives, economic reforms, and infrastructure development across the country.

He also highlighted policies aimed at expanding educational opportunities, including the federal government’s student loan programme, which he said has created new pathways for young Nigerians from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education.

Beyond the president’s initiatives, the APC figure also commended Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for his role in strengthening the party’s organisational structure within Ondo State.

Gossip News Now reports that Adojutelegan characterised the ADC coalition as a gathering of politicians dissatisfied with the current political arrangement, arguing that their alliance was unlikely to significantly alter the political landscape ahead of the next presidential election.

Commentary and Analysis

The emergence of new political alliances ahead of major elections is a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political environment. Opposition parties often attempt to form coalitions in order to consolidate support and challenge the dominance of ruling parties.

However, such alliances frequently face internal challenges ranging from leadership negotiations to ideological differences among participating groups. These factors can influence whether a coalition evolves into a unified political platform or remains a loose partnership of convenience.

For the ruling APC, maintaining confidence in its electoral strength is part of its political strategy, especially as opposition figures begin to explore new alliances. For opposition leaders, the challenge will be presenting a cohesive front capable of mobilising widespread public support.

As discussions around the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum, the success of both ruling and opposition blocs will likely depend on their ability to strengthen grassroots structures and present compelling policy agendas to Nigerian voters.
