Peter Obi Denies Anti-ADC Remarks, Calls Allegations ‘Malicious Fabrications’

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has firmly rejected reports suggesting he made unfavourable remarks about the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its emerging opposition coalition.

The controversy followed publications that circulated online alleging that Obi had criticised the ADC over unresolved matters related to political zoning and power rotation. The reports claimed the remarks were made during a YouTube interview hosted by a platform known as Advocacy for Good Governance.

However, Obi’s media office has strongly denied the claim, describing the reports as inaccurate and intentionally misleading.

According to Gossip News Now, the rebuttal was issued through a statement released by Obi’s spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, who clarified that the former presidential candidate neither granted the interview nor made the comments attributed to him.

In the statement, the Peter Obi Media Office (POMO) stressed that the allegations were completely fabricated and designed to misinform the public.

The media office emphasised that Obi has consistently maintained a respectful relationship with political organisations that share the goal of strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.

Umar noted that the narrative suggesting Obi attacked the ADC contradicts his established political stance and record of collaboration with other reform-minded groups.

The statement also highlighted Obi’s respect for the ADC leadership, particularly under the guidance of former Senate President David Mark, describing the party as one of the organisations contributing to democratic dialogue in the country.

Rather than engaging in criticism of fellow opposition parties, Obi’s recent activities and public engagements have focused on encouraging unity among political actors seeking solutions to Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.

The spokesman further warned that misinformation circulating online could distract from serious national conversations, particularly discussions about economic hardship and governance reforms.

Umar therefore appealed to the public—and especially leaders and supporters of the ADC—to disregard the circulating reports, describing them as politically motivated attempts to distort Obi’s views.

Commentary and Analysis

The incident illustrates the growing influence of social media and online platforms in shaping political narratives. While digital media has expanded access to political discussions, it has also increased the risk of misinformation spreading rapidly before verification.

In Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, alliances and opposition coalitions often attract intense public scrutiny. As a result, statements attributed to political leaders can quickly trigger controversy, even when their authenticity is questionable.

For Peter Obi, whose political messaging frequently centres on reform, accountability, and coalition building, maintaining a reputation for constructive engagement with other parties is strategically important.

Political analysts note that disputes over alleged statements—particularly those involving opposition alliances—may sometimes reflect broader struggles for influence within Nigeria’s competitive political environment.

Ultimately, the statement from Obi’s media office appears intended not only to correct the record but also to reinforce his public position as a politician advocating cooperation among groups seeking to improve governance.
