The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the establishment of temporary leadership committees to oversee the party’s activities in Enugu, Delta, and Rivers states.
The move was approved by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) while acting on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), according to an official communication released by the National Organizing Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan.
Party officials explained that the action follows the provisions outlined in Section 29(2)(b) of the PDP Constitution (2025 as amended), which allows the creation of caretaker committees to manage state chapters when necessary.
Purpose of the Caretaker Committees
The newly formed committees will serve as interim administrative bodies responsible for supervising party affairs within their respective states.
Their primary responsibilities will include coordinating party operations, maintaining internal stability, and preparing the groundwork for the emergence of new elected executives.
According to the PDP, these committees are expected to operate strictly within the guidelines of:
- The PDP Constitution (2025 as amended)
- The Electoral Act 2022
- The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
Duration of the Committees’ Mandate
Party authorities indicated that the caretaker teams will serve for a limited period.
The arrangement is expected to last no longer than 90 days, or until new state party executives are formally elected to assume leadership roles.
This timeline is intended to ensure that the temporary structure does not replace the democratic process within the party.

The party expressed confidence that the committees would carry out their assignments responsibly while upholding the party’s constitutional principles.
Commentary and Analysis
The decision to appoint caretaker committees is a common strategy used by political parties when internal restructuring becomes necessary.
By installing interim leadership, the PDP aims to maintain organizational stability within the affected state chapters while preparing for fresh elections that will produce permanent executives.
Such arrangements often arise when party leadership structures expire, internal disputes occur, or administrative reorganization becomes necessary.
For the PDP, the move could be seen as an attempt to strengthen internal coordination ahead of future political activities and elections.
However, caretaker committees can sometimes become politically sensitive, particularly if party members perceive them as instruments for influencing local power dynamics.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of the new committees will depend on how well they manage party affairs over the next three months and whether they successfully organize transparent processes for the election of new state executives.
