Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues took control early in the West London encounter and maintained their dominance throughout. Their opener came in the 21st minute when Cole Palmer made a perfectly timed run to connect with Malo Gusto’s pass and calmly slot the ball into the net.
Chelsea doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time, with Gusto capping an impressive performance by finishing a move initiated by Pedro Neto, sending the hosts into the break with a commanding lead.
Everton showed more intent after the interval and enjoyed sustained spells of pressure, earning seven corners to Chelsea’s four. Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish led the visitors’ attacking efforts, but clear-cut chances were scarce and Chelsea’s defence held firm. Ultimately, Chelsea’s efficiency in the first half made the difference, with Gusto registering both a goal and an assist.
The victory temporarily moves Chelsea back into the Premier League’s top four. Everton, who remain seventh, suffered a setback in their push for European qualification.
At Anfield, Liverpool also secured a 2-0 win over Brighton in a match defined by early drama and a key tactical decision from manager Arne Slot.
Hugo Ekitike wasted no time in putting Liverpool ahead, scoring inside the opening minute to give the hosts a dream start. Liverpool were then dealt an early blow when Joe Gomez was forced off injured, prompting Slot to introduce Mohamed Salah in the 26th minute.
The substitution was significant, marking Salah’s first appearance since publicly criticising the club, where he claimed he had been “thrown under a bus.” His introduction lifted the atmosphere at Anfield and added sharpness to Liverpool’s attack.
Brighton threatened intermittently but failed to capitalise on their opportunities. Salah tested the goalkeeper shortly before the hour mark, and moments later Liverpool doubled their lead. From sustained pressure, Salah provided the assist as Ekitike rose highest to head home and complete his brace.
Liverpool were clinical, converting both of their shots on target into goals. Brighton, despite seeing plenty of the ball and creating chances, managed only one effort on target and were left frustrated by their lack of cutting edge.
The result lifts Liverpool to sixth place on the Premier League table, pending the outcome of other Matchday 16 fixtures, while Brighton currently sit ninth.
