The administration of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq has rejected calls by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urging the federal government to impose a state of emergency in the state.
The governor’s camp described the demand as politically motivated, arguing that it was intended to create tension in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated online showing individuals identified as suspected bandits who were reportedly arrested in Auchi, Edo State.
In the footage, the suspects allegedly claimed they received weapons and a patrol vehicle branded with Kwara State Government insignia from certain officials.
These allegations quickly drew reactions from political stakeholders in Kwara State.
Officials of the state chapter of the PDP described the claims as deeply troubling and urged the federal government to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The party’s State Secretary, Abdulrahman Kayode, stated that the allegations raised serious concerns about security and accountability.
He also linked the issue to recent violent incidents reported in several communities across the state.
According to Kayode, attacks in local government areas such as Ifelodun, Patigi, Edu, Ekiti, Isin, and Irepodun have heightened public fears about security in the region.
He cited a particular incident in Oke-Ode in Ifelodun Local Government Area, where reports indicated that more than fifteen people lost their lives in a violent attack.
The PDP official further questioned references made in the viral video to an individual allegedly called “Oga Victor,” demanding clarity on the identity and role of the person mentioned.
In addition, the opposition party called on federal security agencies to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations.
The PDP also requested a detailed audit of all government-branded patrol vehicles operating in Kwara State to determine whether any had been improperly used.
However, the Kwara State Government has firmly rejected the accusations.
In response, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Communications, Ibraheem Abdullateef, dismissed the claims as unfounded and described them as part of a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation.
According to him, the opposition party’s demands were an attempt to stir public anxiety and undermine the state government.
He argued that the narrative surrounding the alleged connection between government officials and criminal elements lacked credible evidence.
The state government also issued a separate response through the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju.
Olukoju stated that there had been no confirmed arrests of armed bandits by the Nigerian Army or other security agencies within the areas mentioned.
She further clarified that the Kwara State Government does not possess the authority to distribute military-grade weapons such as AK-47 rifles.
The commissioner reassured residents that the administration remains focused on protecting lives and property across the state.
According to her, the government has no involvement with criminal groups and remains committed to cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace.
Commentary and Analysis
The dispute between the Kwara State Government and the opposition PDP illustrates how security concerns can quickly become politicized, especially as elections approach.
Allegations involving government officials and armed groups tend to attract strong reactions because of the serious implications for public trust and safety.
For opposition parties, raising such concerns can be a way to push for accountability and transparency.
On the other hand, governing authorities often interpret these accusations as political strategies aimed at weakening their credibility.
The situation also highlights the growing influence of viral social media content in shaping public debate.
Videos and online claims can quickly generate widespread attention, sometimes before authorities have verified the information.
Ultimately, independent investigations and credible evidence are essential to clarify situations like this and ensure that public confidence in security institutions remains intact.
