Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has dismissed speculation linking him with a potential move to Manchester City, insisting reports that he could succeed Pep Guardiola are unfounded.
The Italian, who previously served as Guardiola’s assistant at City, has been mentioned in discussions as the club contemplates long-term planning amid uncertainty over Guardiola’s future. Since 2016, Guardiola has become one of City’s most influential managers, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League in the 2022-2023 season.
Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Newcastle on Saturday, Maresca said: “It doesn’t affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation. At this moment, there is no time for these kinds of things. First of all, I have a contract here until 2029. My focus is entirely on this club, and I’m very proud to be here. One week ago I was in Italy, the same with Juventus. So I don’t pay attention because I know it’s not true. It’s important to understand why this news was there, but it’s just speculation.”
Maresca joined Chelsea in June 2024 and is contracted until 2029, with an option for an additional year. His immediate priority is maintaining Chelsea’s strong league form, with the Blues currently sitting fourth ahead of their 1:30 p.m. kickoff against Newcastle.
The City rumours followed comments from Maresca describing what he called his “worst 48 hours” since joining Chelsea, despite overseeing a 2-0 home win over Everton last weekend. This sparked speculation of a possible rift between the manager and club leadership, including co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali and sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.
When asked about discussions with club officials, Maresca clarified: “We are in the same building, so we speak about different things. But about the Everton press conference, no.”
He also reassured supporters about his future at Stamford Bridge, affirming, “Absolutely, yes” when asked if he would remain in charge next season, and urged fans to “continue to support the team.”
