Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has shared her perspective on marriage, describing the institution as “overrated.”
The 42-year-old star told Naija FM that while she remains open to remarriage if it happens naturally, she is not actively seeking it. Jegede emphasized that many relationships tend to change after marriage, with couples who have dated for years sometimes separating shortly after tying the knot.
She questioned whether marriage truly strengthens a relationship, suggesting that it can often introduce unnecessary tension and intolerance.
“I am open to remarriage if it comes, but I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never,’” Jegede said. “I think marriage is overrated. Many couples who dated for 10 to 15 years get married and then break up within 2 to 3 years. Sometimes, you wonder why they didn’t just remain unmarried. Adding the marriage tag often brings in a lot of intolerance. I think it’s better to find someone you love and cohabit with them.”
Jegede’s previous marriage to Olakunle Abounce Fawole ended in 2019 after less than a year. She cited financial challenges and her ex-husband’s inability to manage the relationship and show respect as contributing factors to the split.
In past interviews, Jegede admitted that she had largely been the financial provider during her marriage and expressed regret for prioritizing love over financial stability.
