I Was Expelled From University Over Cultism Allegation – Daniel Etim-Effiong

Popular Nollywood actor Daniel Etim‑Effiong has revealed a painful chapter from his early life, describing how an accusation during his university years dramatically altered his personal journey and spiritual outlook.

During a conversation with media personality Taymesan, the actor spoke about the incident, explaining that he was once expelled from Federal University of Technology Minna over allegations linking him to cult activities on campus.

According to Etim-Effiong, the accusation came unexpectedly and left him deeply shaken. He maintained that the claim was unfounded, describing himself at the time as someone actively involved in church and student fellowship activities rather than anything connected to cultism.

The expulsion forced him to leave school and relocate to Jos in Plateau State. Moving to a new environment brought mixed emotions for the young student—on one hand a feeling of freedom, and on the other a lingering sense of anger and confusion about the circumstances that led to his removal from the university.

He explained that the frustration from the experience pushed him into habits he previously avoided. During that period, he said he began smoking and living recklessly, decisions he later attributed to emotional pain and disappointment with how events had unfolded.

The situation also had a significant impact on his faith. At the time of the accusation, Etim-Effiong was an active member of a Christian fellowship on campus and considered himself deeply committed to religious activities.

However, when the controversy arose, he expected the fellowship community to defend him or at least question the decision that led to his expulsion. Instead, he said he felt abandoned by people he believed would stand by him during a difficult moment.

That perceived lack of support left him discouraged. Gradually, the disappointment created distance between him and the church activities he had once embraced enthusiastically.

Reflecting on the ordeal years later, the actor described how the experience triggered many difficult questions about his faith and life direction. He recalled asking why such a situation happened despite his devotion at the time.

In recounting the emotional struggle, Etim-Effiong noted that he felt betrayed by both circumstances and the silence of people he trusted, adding that he even suggested the fellowship should challenge the decision publicly, but they declined.

Commentary and Analysis

Daniel Etim-Effiong’s story highlights the profound impact that university disciplinary actions and public accusations can have on young people. For many students, their campus years are formative, and events during that period can shape their identity, relationships, and worldview.

The actor’s experience also sheds light on how disappointment within religious or social communities can influence personal faith. When individuals expect strong support from trusted groups and do not receive it, the emotional fallout can lead to a crisis of belief or a temporary withdrawal from those communities.

At the same time, Etim-Effiong’s openness about the episode reflects a broader trend among public figures who share personal struggles to inspire others facing similar challenges. Stories of setbacks, particularly those involving false accusations or misunderstood circumstances, often resonate with people navigating difficult phases of life.

Ultimately, his reflections serve as a reminder that adversity during youth does not permanently define a person’s future. Many individuals who experience setbacks early in life later find new direction and success, just as the actor eventually built a respected career in Nollywood.
