Host nation Morocco kicked off the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, signaling the start of Africa’s premier football tournament.
Real Madrid’s Brahim Díaz opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a composed finish inside the box, netting the tournament’s first goal and electrifying the home crowd. Olympiacos striker Ayoub El Kaabi sealed the victory in the 74th minute with a stunning bicycle kick, a goal that had fans on their feet and instantly became a contender for goal of the tournament.
The first half proved frustrating for Morocco, despite their dominance in possession. Soufiane Rahimi missed a crucial penalty, with Comoros goalkeeper Pandor producing a brilliant save to keep the visitors level at halftime. The Atlas Lions created multiple chances but struggled to turn their territorial control into goals.
Comoros, making only their second AFCON appearance, showcased strong defensive organization and resilience. Goalkeeper Pandor’s crucial saves kept the match competitive, though Morocco’s quality eventually prevailed in the second half.
The win continues a strong record for AFCON hosts, as no host nation has lost their opening match since Burkina Faso in 1998. Morocco, ranked 11th in the world and the highest-rated African team, are aiming for their first continental title since 1976.
The 2025 AFCON runs through January 18, 2026, featuring 24 nations across six host cities in Morocco. Following the opener, Morocco tops Group A with three points, while Mali and Zambia will face off in the group’s second match.
