APC Set to Officially Welcome Plateau Governor Mutfwang in January

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, has revealed plans to officially welcome Caleb Mutfwang into its ranks early next year following his recent departure from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Party leaders disclosed that the formal ceremony is expected to take place in January, marking a significant moment in Plateau State’s political realignment.

Announcement at Stakeholders’ Meeting in Jos

The development was announced by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, during a meeting with party stakeholders held in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

While addressing party members at the gathering, he described the governor’s entry into the party as an important step that could strengthen the APC’s structure across the state.

Earlier Confirmation in Abuja

Yilwatda explained that the governor’s defection had first been made public during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting in Abuja.

That announcement, made at the State House Conference Centre, formally introduced the development to senior members of the party’s national leadership.

Expected Impact on the Party

According to the APC chairman, Mutfwang’s decision to join the party is likely to energize its political base within Plateau State.

He expressed confidence that the governor’s presence would help expand the party’s influence and consolidate its political standing in the region.

Call for Increased Party Participation

During the meeting, party members were encouraged to strengthen their engagement with the APC ahead of future elections.

Yilwatda also reminded supporters about the ongoing electronic membership registration exercise, urging them to participate so their membership can be officially documented.

Appeal for Calm From Party Leaders

Former Plateau State governor and senator Simon Lalong also addressed the gathering.

He commended party members for their loyalty to the APC and urged them to remain patient amid recent political developments, assuring them that their contributions would continue to be valued.

Commitment to Unity Within the Party

The APC State Chairman in Plateau, Rufus Bature, reinforced the importance of unity among party members.

He emphasized that leadership decisions would be respected while maintaining harmony among stakeholders across the state.

Notable Figures in Attendance

The stakeholders’ meeting drew the presence of several prominent APC leaders and political figures. Among those who attended were:

  • Diket Plang
  • Ahmed Idris Wase
  • Naanlong Daniel
  • Babayo Gagdi
  • John Dafa’an

Other party figures, political stakeholders, and regional leaders were also present during the discussions.

Earlier Resistance Within the Party

Interestingly, the governor’s entry into the APC was not always certain. Reports indicate that during an earlier stakeholders’ meeting in Jos in October, several party leaders initially expressed reservations about admitting him.

However, that position later shifted after discussions among party leaders, eventually leading to the confirmation that Mutfwang had joined the ruling party.

Tinubu’s Influence on the Decision

At a separate meeting with political appointees in Jos, Governor Mutfwang disclosed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally encouraged him to consider joining the APC.

According to the governor, he initially resisted the idea because of loyalty to his previous political commitments.

PDP Crisis Influenced the Move

Mutfwang explained that internal challenges within the PDP at the national level eventually played a role in his decision to leave the party.

He also acknowledged that several APC governors had previously approached him about switching parties, although he did not act on those proposals at the time.

Continued Cooperation With the Federal Government

The Plateau governor further stated that despite earlier political differences, the Tinubu administration maintained a cooperative relationship with his government.

He noted that this cordial engagement helped create the environment that eventually influenced his decision to align with the ruling party.

Commentary and Analysis

Governor Mutfwang’s defection highlights the shifting political alliances taking shape across Nigeria as parties begin preparing for the 2027 general elections.

Political realignments involving sitting governors often carry significant implications because they can influence the loyalty of lawmakers, local leaders, and grassroots supporters.

For the APC, welcoming the Plateau governor represents an opportunity to strengthen its presence in a state that has experienced competitive political contests in recent years.

At the same time, such developments can create new internal dynamics within the party as existing members adjust to the arrival of influential political figures.

As Nigeria moves closer to the next election cycle, similar defections and alliances may continue to reshape the country’s political landscape.
