The Federal Government has fulfilled its long-standing promise to reward members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with each player now receiving a housing allocation nearly two years after the pledge was made.

The presentation took place on Monday in Fez, Morocco, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), just a day before Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 AFCON.

Nigeria’s senior men’s team, then coached by Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, ended the 2023 AFCON tournament as runners-up after losing 2-1 to host nation Côte d’Ivoire in the final held between January and February 2024.

Upon their return to Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had honoured the players and officials with national awards under the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) category and also pledged housing and land gifts to both players and members of the backroom staff.

That promise was officially redeemed on Monday at the team’s camp in Morocco as the Super Eagles prepare to begin their 2025 AFCON campaign with a Group C encounter against Tanzania.

Confirming the development, Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe announced via a dedicated WhatsApp media platform that the Federal Government, through the NSC, had completed the housing reward process for the team.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi, also confirmed that the national honours were issued as either MON or OON, depending on previous awards already held by individual players.

They further disclosed that the housing and land grants approved by President Tinubu have been fully processed, with Certificates of Occupancy officially issued to beneficiaries.

Now under the guidance of Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are back on continental duty in Morocco, aiming to reclaim African glory after narrowly missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, have been drawn in Group C and will face Tunisia after their opener against Tanzania, before concluding the group stage against Uganda.

The gesture follows a similar pattern of recognition extended by President Tinubu to other national teams in 2025. The Super Falcons received national honours and a cash reward of $100,000 each after winning a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, while the women’s senior basketball team, D’Tigress, were also promised comparable rewards following their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket triumph in August.
