2027: Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi Seen As Strong Southern Presidential Contenders – Dele Momodu

Prominent media entrepreneur and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dele Momodu has identified two major political figures from southern Nigeria who he believes could play significant roles in the 2027 presidential election.

According to Momodu, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi are among the strongest potential contenders from the southern region if the race eventually shifts in that direction.

The political commentator shared his views during an online discussion on X (formerly Twitter) known as “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027,” where participants analyzed possible political alliances ahead of Nigeria’s next general election.

Momodu explained that any successful presidential ticket would likely require a strong balance of regional political influence. In his view, combining northern and southern political strengths could create a formidable electoral coalition.

He specifically mentioned the possibility of a partnership involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar alongside either Obi or Amaechi.

Such a combination, he suggested, could produce a competitive ticket capable of attracting wide national support.

While several politicians have expressed interest in contesting future elections, Momodu pointed out that the reality of presidential politics means that ultimately only one candidate can emerge from each political bloc.

In assessing the potential of the individuals mentioned, Momodu spoke highly of Peter Obi’s political standing and the momentum he has built in recent years.

He described Obi as a politician who still holds considerable appeal among voters and could remain a relevant figure in the country’s presidential contest.

Momodu also acknowledged Rotimi Amaechi’s experience and influence within Nigeria’s political establishment.

The former Rivers State governor, he noted, has been deeply involved in national politics for many years, particularly through his role in helping former President Muhammadu Buhari secure presidential victories on two occasions.

Beyond individual candidacies, Momodu also reflected on the broader state of Nigeria’s opposition politics.

He suggested that the African Democratic Congress might soon attract more political actors who are currently within the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to him, internal challenges and structural disagreements within the PDP could push some of its members to explore alternative platforms.

Momodu cited political developments involving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as an example of how politicians sometimes change party platforms when they encounter obstacles within their existing political structures.

Such situations, he argued, demonstrate why politicians must carefully plan their long-term strategies ahead of future elections.

He also emphasized that the political environment leading up to 2027 will likely involve shifting alliances and negotiations among various parties.

In this context, emerging platforms like the ADC could become more attractive to politicians seeking new opportunities or political space.

Commentary and Analysis

Dele Momodu’s remarks highlight the early conversations already shaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Although the election cycle is still some years away, discussions about possible alliances and candidate combinations are gradually gaining momentum.

Peter Obi remains a prominent figure due to the strong support he received during the 2023 presidential election, particularly among younger voters and urban populations.

Rotimi Amaechi, on the other hand, represents a different type of political strength rooted in long-standing experience within Nigeria’s political establishment.

Momodu’s suggestion of a potential alliance involving Atiku Abubakar also reflects the continuing importance of regional balance in Nigerian presidential politics.

As political parties reorganize and prepare for the future, the coming years are likely to witness intense negotiations, shifting loyalties, and the emergence of new coalitions across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
