Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has identified former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as leading contenders for the presidency from Nigeria’s South in the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an X Space discussion titled “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027,” Momodu emphasized the strategic importance of pairing either Obi or Amaechi with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. “If we have Atiku with Peter Obi or Amaechi, these are strong contenders from the South, though many express interest, only one person can ultimately run,” he said.
Momodu highlighted Obi’s prospects, describing him as particularly well-positioned for any future presidential contest. “Peter Obi stands a very good chance. Rotimi Amaechi brings significant experience in national politics, especially considering his key role in supporting Buhari’s presidential campaigns twice,” he added.
The ADC leader also forecasted a potential shift of political allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC. He noted that many PDP members may seek new platforms once they encounter internal constraints within their party. “The majority of PDP members will migrate to the ADC when they realize the obstacles within their party. For instance, Governor Ademola Adeleke moved to the Accord Party after encountering a political roadblock ahead of his 2026 election. This demonstrates the urgent need to plan strategically for the future,” Momodu explained.
