PDP Defections Validate Wike’s Position — Fayose Declares

Spread the love

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has argued that the ongoing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party has strengthened the position previously taken by the group of governors known as the G-5.

During a television interview, Fayose suggested that events unfolding within the opposition party appear to validate the concerns earlier raised by the faction led by Nyesom Wike.

Growing Departures From the Party

In recent months, several politicians—including lawmakers, party leaders, and elected officials—have reportedly moved away from the PDP.

According to Fayose, these exits illustrate deeper internal tensions that had been building within the party long before they became widely visible.

He noted that the increasing number of departures has intensified debate about the future direction of the opposition party.

The G-5 Governors’ Controversial Stand

The G-5 governors attracted significant criticism during the build-up to the 2023 elections after openly challenging decisions taken by the PDP leadership.

At the time, many party loyalists accused the group of undermining unity within the organisation.

However, Fayose now believes the governors were responding to problems they had already identified within the party structure.

Political Survival and Strategic Choices

Fayose suggested that politicians often make decisions based on what they believe will protect both their political careers and the interests of the people they represent.

From his perspective, those leaving the PDP are reacting to changing political realities rather than acting purely out of disloyalty.

He argued that such choices are common in Nigeria’s political landscape, where alliances frequently evolve.

Early Warnings About Internal Problems

The former governor stated that concerns about the party’s direction had been raised long before the current defections occurred.

He explained that he personally warned the PDP leadership about growing dissatisfaction among members.

According to him, those warnings were not addressed in time.

Disagreement Over Party Agreements

Another point highlighted by Fayose relates to disputes surrounding political agreements within the party.

He claimed that Wike repeatedly complained about commitments he believed were not honoured during the 2023 election period.

Rather than remain silent, the former Rivers governor openly expressed his dissatisfaction.

Support From Other Political Figures

Fayose also mentioned that several prominent politicians stood alongside Wike during the dispute.

Among them was Seyi Makinde, who, along with other members of the group, attempted to engage in dialogue aimed at resolving the disagreements.

Despite criticism from some quarters, the alliance remained united in its position.

Shifting Public Perception

According to Fayose, public opinion about the G-5 governors appears to be changing.

He recalled that the group was initially labelled as disloyal to the party.

However, he believes the recent wave of political departures has caused many observers to reconsider that assessment.

Commentary and Analysis

The situation highlights the fluid nature of political alliances in Nigeria.

Defections between parties are common, particularly when internal disputes arise or when politicians perceive new strategic opportunities.

Fayose’s comments reflect a broader debate about whether the challenges currently facing the PDP stem from unresolved internal disagreements dating back to the 2023 election cycle.

As the country gradually approaches the next electoral season, the ability of major parties to maintain unity may prove decisive in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
