Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said the growing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that the controversial stance taken by the G-5 governors, led by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, was justified.
Speaking during an interview on TVC, Fayose argued that the governors who were once heavily criticised and labelled disloyal to the party merely acted according to their convictions and foresaw the internal turmoil now engulfing the opposition party.
According to Fayose, recent exits by PDP governors, lawmakers, and prominent party figures show that Wike and his allies accurately read the political landscape long before the crisis escalated.
Commenting on the defections, Fayose said those leaving the party were driven by what they believed would best protect their political survival and the interests of their constituents.
He noted that while the mass movement has sparked outrage among party loyalists, he does not fault the defectors for making decisions they felt were necessary.
Fayose revealed that he had previously warned the PDP leadership about deepening internal problems but claimed his concerns were ignored until it was too late.
He explained that the warning signs were already visible well before the defections began, adding that he had openly discussed the looming challenges on public platforms.
The former governor further stated that Wike had never concealed his dissatisfaction with the PDP leadership, particularly regarding agreements reached with the party’s presidential candidate during the 2023 general election.
According to Fayose, Wike consistently maintained that those agreements were not honoured, a grievance he openly confronted rather than suppressing.
He added that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, alongside other members of the G-5 group, stood firmly with Wike and made repeated efforts to resolve the crisis, including reaching out to President Bola Tinubu at different points.
Despite intense backlash and public criticism, Fayose said the alliance remained united and resolute.
Reflecting on public perception, Fayose noted that the G-5 governors were initially branded as traitors to the PDP, but recent developments have significantly altered that narrative.
He pointed out that the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates, as well as several governors and lawmakers, have since exited the PDP, reinforcing the argument that the crisis was deeper than many initially believed.
Fayose concluded that the unfolding events have effectively vindicated Wike, asserting that the former Rivers governor identified the party’s internal issues long before they became obvious to others.
