The Chief Executive Officer of Hosamudia Farm, Don Pedro Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, was reportedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by individuals suspected to be thugs in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to reports, the incident occurred at Uwa Primary School, where Pedro Obaseki had gone to play football. He was allegedly accosted by the group, stripped naked, and forcibly marched through parts of the city.

Sources said the attackers later took him to the Oba of Benin’s Palace, where he was reportedly compelled to kneel at the palace gate. The suspected assailants allegedly informed palace guards that they had apprehended an “Oghion”—a term interpreted as an enemy of the Oba.

However, palace officials reportedly intervened after explaining to the group, in the Bini language, that the Oba was not present at the palace at the time. It was disclosed that the monarch had gone to the Holy Arousa Cathedral for a thanksgiving service marking the conclusion of the Igue Festival.

One of the palace chiefs was quoted as cautioning against any unrest, stating that the palace would not tolerate disorder on such a significant religious day. Despite resistance from the suspected thugs, palace chiefs eventually escorted Pedro Obaseki into the palace for his safety.

Meanwhile, the incident comes amid recent public remarks by Godwin Obaseki, in which the former governor condemned politicians who enrich themselves after attaining political office.

In a video shared on social media platform 𝕏, Obaseki warned that leaders who abuse power for personal or family gain would face divine consequences. He stressed that political authority is a sacred trust meant to serve humanity and honour God.

“If you seek power and use it only for yourself, your friends, and those close to you, then God will punish you,” Obaseki said. “Power given by God must be used to glorify Him and serve the people.”

The former governor added that he harbours no regrets about his time in office and would not alter his leadership approach if given another opportunity.
